Restore a Brass Door Handle With Brasso in 5 Steps for a Mirror Finish
Brasso, made by Reckitt since 1905, can take a solid brass handle from decade-dull to reflective in about 40 minutes when used with cotton wadding. Before opening the tin, check for lacquer: a clear coat changes the job because the polish has to reach bare metal.
Check for Lacquer Before You Polish
Brasso gives poor results on a lacquered handle. Most brass door furniture sold since the 1980s has shipped with a thin clear coat, often cellulose or acrylic lacquer, applied to slow tarnish. Polish rubbed over that film only buffs the coating, leaving dull patches sealed underneath.
The test takes seconds. Touch an inconspicuous edge with a cotton bud dipped in acetone-free nail varnish remover. Sticky residue on the bud, with a brighter patch underneath, points to lacquer. No visible change, with a cold bare-metal feel, points to raw brass that Brasso can polish directly.
Removing lacquer is its own job. One method is a ten-minute soak in near-boiling water with a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda. Another is a proprietary stripper such as Nitromors, followed by gentle scraping with a wooden spatula. Old lacquer that has yellowed unevenly often makes a handle look blotchy instead of evenly tarnished. Once the coating has gone, the metal oxidises freely again, which is the surface Brasso is made to treat.
Put These Items on the Bench
Set out five things: a tube or tin of Brasso, cotton wadding or several soft cotton cloths, nitrile gloves, an old toothbrush, and a clean microfibre for the final buff. Lay newspaper under the handle, because the black residue stains grout and timber.
Remove the handle from the door if the fixing allows it. Many lever handles sit on a rose held by two grub screws, usually reached with a 2 mm or 2.5 mm hex key. Off the door, the underside of the lever and the back of the rose are easy to reach. Those two areas often stay tarnished after a quick polish in place.
Some roses hide the fixings behind a snap-on cover. A screwdriver can gouge the rose, so use a plastic trim tool to prise the cover away.
The Five Steps
Step one: shake the tin. Brasso separates in storage, and the active fine abrasive settles at the bottom. Put a coin-sized amount onto the cotton wadding.
Step two: move the polish across the surface in small circles. If the handle has a brushed finish, follow the grain. The cloth should turn black within seconds as it lifts copper and zinc oxides. Add fresh polish when the wadding stops darkening, because a saturated pad has little cutting action left.
Step three: use the toothbrush on knurling, threaded collars, and engraved maker marks. Recesses hold the heaviest oxidation, while a flat cloth passes over the high points. Brass handles by makers such as Croft or Frank Allart often carry a stamped reference on the rose, and that reference may only show clearly after the brush clears the crevice.
Step four: leave the polish to haze. Brasso forms a chalky grey film while the solvent evaporates, and that film holds the loosened oxide. Wait two to three minutes. Buffing at once smears residue back over the surface.
Step five: buff hard with the dry microfibre until the haze has lifted and the surface gives a clear reflection. Use a fresh corner of the cloth for a second pass to take away the last streaks. The jump from clean brass to mirror-bright brass usually comes from extra buffing time at this stage.
When Old Brass Needs Extra Cycles
Heavy oxidation on old brass often needs two or three complete applications. A single wipe can lift surface grime and still leave a brown cast behind.
A Victorian rim-lock mortice knob is a useful reference point because the form concentrates several problems in one small fitting. A knob of roughly 55 mm diameter may carry a century of handling oil baked into tarnish, enough to make the brass look almost brown. Before using Brasso, a 15-minute soak in warm soapy water helps soften that oil, which Brasso alone struggles to shift.
On the first cycle, expect the cloth to turn solid black in under a minute if the surface is heavily oxidised. That blackening shows that loose grime and oxides are coming away, even when the underlying brown stain barely changes. Let the polish haze before judging the result.
On the second cycle, leaving the film for a full three minutes before buffing can bring yellow metal back across much of the surface. In a badly tarnished knob, about 70 per cent of the surface may brighten while darker patches remain in casting pits. Those pits come from the rough texture left by the original sand mould.
The toothbrush matters most in those pits. Work polish into each depression and scrub along the casting seam, then buff the whole knob again. A third cycle can even the colour across the surface.
For a knob in that condition, allow around 35 minutes of polishing after the warm soapy soak. A clean result may be bright enough for the threaded spindle hole to read as a reflection, with remaining imperfections tied to the casting texture.
Protect the Shine
Bare polished brass starts oxidising as soon as buffing stops. In a coastal or humid hallway, the fresh shine can visibly cloud within two to three weeks.
The low-effort route is microcrystalline wax such as Renaissance Wax, developed at the British Museum and used on its metal collection. Apply a thin coat with a lint-free cloth, wait ten minutes, then buff. The wax seals the surface for several months, can be re-polished without stripping, and is the standard choice for antique fittings because it does not yellow.
The durable route is clear brass lacquer. It can last years, although it locks in the exact state of the metal, so any missed tarnish remains sealed under the coat. Spray lacquer needs the handle off the door, a dust-free space, and three light passes. One heavy pass tends to run and pool.
For a handle in daily use, wax accepts wear better. Lacquer eventually chips at contact points and lets a dark ring of oxidation creep under the film.
One Limit of Brasso
Brasso polishes brass. It cannot restore brass plate once the thin plated layer has worn through to the base metal underneath, which on cheap fittings is often steel or zinc alloy.
Tell Solid Brass From Plate
A magnet gives the quickest answer. Solid brass is non-magnetic, so a fridge magnet slides off without grip. If the magnet sticks, the handle is steel with a brass coating, and polishing the worn areas exposes silvery base metal that Brasso cannot turn back to gold.
Weight is the second clue. A solid brass lever feels noticeably dense for its size. A plated hollow casting feels light and can ring hollow when tapped against a hard edge.
Check the worn high spots closely: the centre of a knob, or the underside of a lever where thumbs land thousands of times. Plating thins there first and can show a faint pink or silver bloom under bright light.
On solid brass, every pass with the wadding improves the finish, and the same fitting can be polished again over the years. On plate, aggressive polishing removes the very coating that gives the handle its brass colour. Once a plated handle has worn through, the honest fixes are replacement or re-plating by an electroplater, and no polish on the shelf substitutes for that.
A handle can pass the shine test and still leave one question unresolved: how much of that brightness is brass all the way through?
