Kesseböhmer LeMans vs Vauth-Sagel Corner Carousel for an L-Shaped Kitchen
A blind corner in an L-shaped kitchen can hide about 0.5 cubic metres of usable volume. Kesseböhmer's LeMans II swings kidney trays out on an arc arm, while Vauth-Sagel's VS COR carousels rotate shelves around a central post. Cabinet width and door type separate the two systems before finish or price enters the quote.
Cabinet width before mechanism
Kesseböhmer’s LeMans II is made for blind-corner carcasses in 450, 500, and 600 mm widths. The tray needs a door opening of at least 400 mm to clear the front frame. Vauth-Sagel’s VS COR carousel range belongs in a square corner cabinet, commonly 900 x 900 mm or 1000 x 1000 mm, with a diagonal or bi-fold door across the corner.
Those dimensions come from two different L-shaped kitchen layouts. One uses a standard cabinet on one leg of the run and leaves a blind pocket behind the next door. The other builds the corner as its own square unit, with the access point on the 45-degree face. The blind pocket suits a LeMans II, while the square unit accepts the carousel hardware.
Carcass size matters more than the visible door front during selection. A 600 mm door can belong to a blind-corner plan, a square-corner plan, or a site-built hybrid, so the internal width and the available swing path have to match the mechanism listed by the maker.
How the LeMans II arm moves
The LeMans II tray sits on a curved steel arm fixed to the cabinet floor. Pulling the shelf brings a kidney-shaped platform out of the blind pocket and around the fixed carcass wall, so items stored at the back arrive in front of the opening. Kesseböhmer rates each shelf level at 25 kg, and the usual setup has two levels.
Chrome-wire and solid-base Arena trays use the same basic arm geometry. The Arena base gives heavier objects a flatter bearing surface, while the chrome-wire version leaves the shelf more open. The load rating published for the shelf does not change between those broad tray styles.
The door arrangement has to leave the arc clear. Some installations link the door to the mechanism, while many have the door opening first and the tray pulled by hand afterward. Full-extension versions carry the front tray clear of the carcass, which changes the experience from reaching into a corner to viewing the tray in the room side of the opening.
Small tolerances matter on the narrower carcasses. With less than a 400 mm door opening, the front tray can foul the cabinet frame. On a 450 mm carcass, the clearance beside the hinge-side wall may be only a few millimetres. Blum soft-close hinges do not block the arm by themselves, although the hinge cup boring position needs checking against the swing radius before drilling.
The carousel in brief
A Vauth-Sagel carousel uses a full-round or three-quarter-round shelf rotating around a central post fixed between the cabinet floor and the shelf above. Nothing extends outward, so stored items come to the front as the shelves turn. Rear contents arrive at the opening on a spin as long as the door clears the rotation path.
Load, sag, and wasted corners
Kesseböhmer publishes a 25 kg per-shelf figure for the LeMans II. That weight is carried on a cantilevered arm bolted to the cabinet base, so a fully loaded tray of tins or cast iron puts stress into the arm and its fixing points.
After years of daily use, arm deflection is the wear concern. The heavier-gauge Arena base gives the tray more stiffness than the open wire basket, which helps when the load is dense and low. The arm still has to swing smoothly while carrying that mass away from the floor fixing.
A Vauth-Sagel carousel distributes its load around a central column. The shelves rotate instead of projecting outside the box, so the failure pattern is different. Overloading can introduce play at the top bearing, and the round shelves leave empty triangular spaces inside the corners of a square cabinet.
The arithmetic behind that lost area is straightforward. A 900 mm square corner cabinet has an internal footprint close to 0.81 square metres. A circular shelf inscribed in the square uses about 78 percent of the area, with four unreachable triangular voids left around it.
The LeMans II tray is shaped for the L of a blind corner, so it uses a higher share of the volume its arm can reach. It still cannot serve the whole footprint of a square corner unit, because the mechanism is drawn around a side access opening and a fixed carcass wall.
A shelf full of stockpots, cast iron, or tins makes the LeMans II’s cantilever the part to watch. Tall bottles, packets, and other lighter goods suit the carousel’s continuous rotation because several items can be presented with one turn. Published load figures give a starting point, while several thousand cycles reveal whether the arm or the post begins to feel loose. Catalogues also leave out the feel of a corner opened a dozen times a day for a decade, especially when the load changes from light packets to dense cookware.
Door hardware changes the price
The carousel usually requires a bi-fold door or a single diagonal door across the corner. A bi-fold corner door uses two hinge sets plus a folding stay, and alignment becomes delicate on a handleless run. Two leaves that sit slightly proud or uneven will show across the whole L-shaped line.
A diagonal corner door has its own issue on handleless cabinet fittings such as a J-pull profile or a Blum Tip-On gullwing. Its reveal must match the flanking doors closely, or the corner looks mis-set even when the shelves rotate properly.
The LeMans II keeps a standard hinged door on a standard cabinet. The door normally needs no special hardware beyond the Blum soft-close hinges specified elsewhere in the kitchen. In exchange, the user opens the door and pulls the tray, while the carousel gives a passive spin from the corner face. Fixed-price kitchen quotes can bury the extra corner door hardware inside the carousel line, making the two mechanisms look closer in cost until the door parts are separated.
A 900 mm corner compared two ways
Take an L-shaped run with a genuine 900 x 900 mm square corner cabinet and a 600 mm cabinet available on one leg. A Vauth-Sagel three-quarter carousel uses the square corner, brings perhaps 60 to 70 percent of stored items into view on each rotation, and needs the diagonal door with its hinge set.
Reworking the same corner as a blind unit changes the storage pattern. The LeMans II sits behind the 600 mm door, reaches into the pocket, and carries two 25 kg trays. The plain hinged door stays, although a strip of the deep corner behind the fixed wall remains unreachable.
Cost splits across mechanism and door. A carousel plus bi-fold or diagonal door hardware typically lands above a LeMans II with a standard door, with the gap shifting by finish and by whether the carcass is bought as a corner unit or built blind on site. Raw litres favour the carousel in a square cabinet, while the LeMans II recovers a high share of the blind-pocket volume it can physically touch. The buying choice sets a passive spin at higher door cost beside an active pull-out at a lower one.
Retrofit work exposes the difference
The LeMans II often wins in an existing blind-corner carcass because it bolts to the cabinet floor and can keep the door already fitted. The job stays within the cabinet opening, provided the width and swing clearances match the mechanism.
Replacing a worn lazy susan with a Vauth-Sagel carousel is straightforward when the old cabinet is already square and already has a diagonal door. A blind-corner conversion needs carcass work and a new door, so the fitting moves out of a simple hardware swap. The same carcass-first constraint appears across fitted furniture using runners, brackets, or shelf mechanisms, where the built box limits the hardware available.
A final quote for either corner can still turn on a small drawing detail: hinge boring, door reveal, and whether the corner front is already the right door.
