Osmo Polyx Oil vs Bona Traffic HD for a High-Traffic Oak Floor
A 15 square metre solid oak hallway with twenty or more daily crossings makes the split between Osmo Polyx Oil and Bona Traffic HD obvious. One finish lives in the upper timber with wax at the surface; the other cures as a polyurethane film that takes most of the abrasion.
Where the cured finish sits
Osmo Polyx Oil is a hardwax oil made from natural oils such as sunflower and soybean oil, with carnauba and candelilla waxes carried in solvent. As it cures, the solvent flashes off, oil moves into the upper cell structure of the oak, and the wax fraction crosslinks at the surface.
What remains is a very thin microporous layer, roughly a few microns. The surface is sealed enough to carry normal use, yet the oak fibre can still respond to humidity changes because no rigid skin locks the top of the board.
Bona Traffic HD works through another chemistry. The product is a two-component waterborne polyurethane; the isocyanate crosslinker in the hardener is mixed into the base resin, and the usable pot life is around three to four hours before the reaction has gone too far for good application.
Once cured, two or three coats leave a continuous film bonded to the surface. The total dry build is usually around 60 to 90 microns, so abrasion is taken mainly by that polyurethane layer while the oak sits protected below it.
Drag a heavy chair leg across the floor and the practical difference shows. Traffic HD will usually keep the mark within the polyurethane unless the gouge is deep, leaving the timber sealed. On an Osmo floor, the same scratch can cut directly into the wood because there is no thick sacrificial layer above the grain.
Abrasion ratings and wear-through
Bona publishes Taber abrasion results for Traffic HD and sells it into commercial settings, including shops, restaurants and sports halls. The film resists wear because the two components react into a hard, densely crosslinked polyurethane.
In a domestic hallway receiving twenty crossings a day, a properly applied three-coat Traffic HD system can run five to seven years before through-wear appears at the door threshold and at pivot points. The number assumes the coating was applied well and the film remains intact.
Reduce the whole comparison to a single Taber-wheel abrasion figure and Osmo can look weaker. Home floors fail in visible patterns, and those patterns matter. Once a polyurethane film is breached in one place, raw grey timber appears next to a step in the coating edge. Repair then means sanding into the surrounding finish and feathering the transition, and that edge rarely disappears completely.
An oiled surface has no film edge to break. It thins over a broader area, and the worn patch is simply oak that needs more oil. Polyx Oil also covers around 24 square metres per litre per coat because it is spread extremely thinly and the excess is wiped back. Traffic HD covers roughly 8 to 10 square metres per litre per coat because it is building thickness. Raw material consumption therefore favours the oil, although labour and later recoating costs move in different ways over the floor’s life.
Repairs set the maintenance rhythm
A scratch in an oiled floor stays local. The usual repair is to clean the mark, abrade it lightly with a fine pad, then rub fresh Osmo into that small area with a cloth.
Fresh oil blends into the surrounding wax layer because the chemistry is the same. After curing, the edge of the repair is usually hard to find. Whole-board sanding is unnecessary, and a hallway scuff can be dealt with in an afternoon using a tin and a rag.
Damage to Traffic HD behaves like damage to a continuous skin. A shallow mark that only affects the surface can be handled by screening and recoating across a whole room, restoring sheen and adding fresh film. A deep gouge that breaks through the coating creates a more awkward defect because moisture can creep underneath the polyurethane from that point.
The proper repair for that deeper damage means sanding the damaged zone. Waterborne polyurethane cures as discrete coats, so a small patch recoat almost always leaves a witness line where the new film meets the old film. Hiding that line usually pushes the job to the entire board run or the whole room.
In a busy hallway, the oil system encourages maintenance while the defects are still small: a scuff near the shoe rack, another at the turn into a room, then a rubbed-in top-up where the surface has gone dull. These small jobs can be nearly invisible after curing, so they often get handled before the floor looks tired.
Polyurethane runs on a longer cycle. The film may be left alone for years because it remains intact. Then a worn threshold or a cluster of gouges can make the job large enough for a full screen-and-recoat, bringing dust, furniture removal and often hired equipment.
So the practical choice for a hallway is the kind of interruption that fits the house: frequent small touch-ups that disappear into the surface, or a larger recoat every few years. Traffic HD also has a pot life, and its recoat window is measured in hours; getting the next coat down inside that window matters for intercoat adhesion. Osmo allows more room on timing and is harder to spoil through application error, which helps explain its place in the do-it-yourself oak market, while Traffic HD remains a default choice for trade floor finishers.
Slip resistance and bare feet
Matt Osmo on oak leaves a slightly textured, low-sheen surface, with wax at the surface and the grain still faintly perceptible, so many people find it more secure under socks in a hallway. Traffic HD comes in matt and extra-matt grades because high-gloss polyurethane on oak can read as slippery and shows footprints; the extra-matt version lowers the sheen without reducing the film’s abrasion performance.
Five-year material and labour on 15 square metres
Take a 15 square metre oak hallway and leave the initial sanding out of the calculation, since both systems need the same sanding at the start. Polyx Oil begins with two thin coats. At 24 square metres per litre per coat, the hallway uses about 1.25 litres across both coats, so a 2.5 litre tin covers the job and leaves spare material.
Across five years, a busy hall finished in oil might need two or three local touch-ups and one full maintenance coat. That material can come from the spare tin or from a second small tin. Total material over the period still sits comfortably under the price of three tins, and each visit is a rag-and-pad job that can be done in hours without removing skirting or hiring machinery.
The Traffic HD specification for the same hallway is three coats. Using the rough coverage figure of 9 square metres per litre per coat, 15 square metres across three coats comes to about 5 litres. The product is sold in 4.95 litre kits including hardener, so one full kit is needed at the start. That two-component kit costs several times as much as an Osmo tin. If it has been applied well, there may be no intervention during the five-year period. When a threshold wears through in year five or six, the repair becomes a full screen-and-recoat, with another kit, buffer hire and the room cleared. The oil keeps material use low and spreads the work into small jobs; Traffic HD carries the larger initial kit cost and can leave the floor untouched until the first full recoat is due.
Water at the doorway
Grey water staining around a hallway door comes from standing moisture where wet shoes and umbrellas drip. Neither finish eliminates that problem. Repeated wetting can darken the bare-ish oak on an Osmo floor over time, so the doorway area needs prompt wiping and occasional re-oiling.
Traffic HD resists water far better while the film is intact, and on an unbroken floor that is the end of the matter. The complication is the scratch you do not notice. Moisture entering through a break can sit trapped under the polyurethane and stain timber in a spot that is awkward to reach, sometimes spreading well beyond the original cut before anything shows on the surface. The single most useful habit at the threshold, whichever finish you have laid, is to keep a doormat that actually holds water and to wipe the bare strip in front of the door before drips have time to settle. With Traffic HD, add one thing: when you spot a scratch near the door, deal with it early, because the damage that matters there is the water you cannot see working its way under a film you assumed was still whole.
