Worx Landroid Robotic Mower Compared Against Husqvarna Automower 305
Two robots, two different philosophies about how a lawn gets cut. The Worx Landroid M (WR141E) ships at roughly £550 to £750 depending on model and accessories. The Husqvarna Automower 305 sits closer to £1,200. The gap is real, but so is what the gap buys, and it is not what the spec sheets lead you to assume.
Both machines cut by random pattern inside a boundary wire you peg or bury around the edge of the lawn. That is the shared starting point. The Worx Landroid M handles up to about 500 square metres on the WR141E; the Husqvarna Automower 305 is rated for 500 square metres as well, so on paper they overlap almost exactly. Then you put them on an actual garden and the differences start showing up where the marketing never looks.
The Landroid runs a single front pivoting wheel and a narrow body that lets it thread gaps a wider deck cannot. The 305 is heavier, plants itself better on slopes, and recovers from being shoved off line by a tree root without the panic-spinning the cheaper Worx does on rough ground.
Slope behaviour is where the price gap earns itself
Put both on a lawn with a 30 percent incline and watch what happens at the top of the run. The Automother 305 is rated to 40 percent (about 22 degrees) and it holds the climb. Its wheels are larger, the weight sits low, and the traction control eases off before it spins. On wet grass first thing in the morning it still climbs, leaving a faint tyre mark that vanishes by midday.
The Landroid M is rated to 35 percent on the WR141E, and that figure is optimistic on anything damp. The single-wheel front end means the drive wheels carry more of the steering load, and on a slick slope it will sometimes stall, reverse, and try a different angle. That works most of the time. The edge case that bites people: a slope that also curves, like the side of a raised border. The Worx loses the line, drifts downhill, and you find it sulking against a fence. The 305 corrects mid-turn because it has the grip to.
If your garden is flat, none of this matters and you are paying Husqvarna for traction you will never use. If you have terraced beds, banks, or a lawn that drops toward a patio, the 305 stops being expensive and starts being the only one that finishes the job unattended.
Cut quality and how often they actually mow
Neither robot collects clippings. They mulch, dropping fine cuttings back into the sward, which is why you run them daily or near-daily rather than weekly. Cut little, cut often, and the lawn never sees a long blade.
The Landroid M cuts a 18 cm swathe with three small razor blades on a spinning disc. Height adjusts from 30 mm to 60 mm by a dial on top. The blades are cheap, around £10 for a pack of nine, and you swap them every six to eight weeks because they dull fast on sandy soil or after clipping a hidden stone.
The Automower 305 also uses three pivoting razor blades, cut width 22 cm, height 20 mm to 50 mm set by a turn-dial under the hood. Same mulching principle, slightly lower minimum height if you want a tighter finish. In practice the 305 leaves a more even surface on coarse rye-dominated lawns because the heavier body presses the grass flatter as it passes, so the disc catches blades the lighter Worx skips over on the first pass.
The weekly running pattern differs too. Worx schedules through the Landroid app and uses what they call AIA, a cut-time calculation based on lawn size, which tends to overestimate. You will catch it running at hours you did not want. The 305 calculates its own working time from the area you program at setup and is harder to micromanage but quieter about it.
Rain, sensors, and the things that go wrong outdoors
The Landroid M has a rain sensor that sends it home when it gets wet, configurable to a delay so a brief shower does not abort the whole session. Useful, but the sensor sits on top and clogs with grass dust and pollen over a season; a wipe with a damp cloth every few weeks keeps it honest. The 305 has no rain sensor as standard and will cut in the rain, which sounds worse but produces fewer interruptions and the cut quality holds because it is mulching anyway.
Lift and tilt sensors on both stop the blade disc within fractions of a second if the machine is picked up or tipped, which matters if a child or a curious dog is in the garden. The 305 alarms loudly and demands a PIN if lifted, a genuine theft deterrent. The Landroid has a PIN lock and an optional Find My Landroid GPS module, sold separately for around £100, that you bolt in if theft is a worry.
The failure that catches everyone with both brands is the boundary wire. A strimmer cut through it, a mole pushed it up, a frost heave snapped it over winter. The robot circles the perimeter, finds no signal, and parks itself with an error. On the Worx the app reports a wire fault but not the location. On Husqvarna the display says loop signal lost and you walk the perimeter with the supplied indicator or just look for the break. Burying the wire 3 to 5 cm with a half-moon edging iron instead of pegging it on the surface removes 90 percent of these calls, and it is the single setup decision that determines whether you touch the machine again all summer.
Charging, docking, narrow passages
The Automother 305 docks reliably. It follows the boundary wire back to the station and slots in on the first attempt most of the time. The Landroid uses the same wire-following return, but the narrow single-wheel front makes its docking approach fussier; an off-centre arrival means it backs out and retries, and on a station placed on a slight slope it can miss three or four times before it catches.
Where the Worx wins outright is narrow passages. A lawn split into two areas joined by a gap of 60 cm defeats many robots. The Landroid threads gaps down to about 50 cm because the body is slim and it has a passage-following mode. The 305 needs more like a metre and struggles with pinch points, so a garden with a thin throat between two lawns is a Worx job by default.
A short note on noise
Both run around 58 to 60 decibels, quiet enough to mow at night. The 305 is the quieter of the two by a couple of decibels, mostly because its drive motors are smoother.
Worked example: a 350 square metre garden with one bank
Take a real plot. 350 square metres of lawn, mostly flat, with one 25 percent bank running down to a gravel path, and a 55 cm gap between the front and back lawns.
The Landroid M (WR141E) covers the area inside its 500 square metre rating with room to spare. It threads the 55 cm gap without a second boundary loop. The bank at 25 percent is inside its 35 percent rating, so on dry days it climbs fine. The catch is the gravel path at the bottom of the bank: if the Worx overruns the wire on a damp descent, it ends up on gravel and grinds a blade. You set the boundary wire 35 cm back from the gravel edge to give it margin. Total spend, machine plus the GPS module, around £700.
The Automother 305 handles the bank with zero drama and ignores the damp. But the 55 cm gap is below its comfortable passage width, so you either run a separate boundary loop for the back lawn and carry the robot between zones, or you widen the gap. Total spend around £1,200, and you have inherited a two-zone management problem the cheaper machine solved for free.
On that specific plot the Worx is the better buy despite being the lesser machine, because the layout plays to its single strength and the bank is just inside its limit. Shift the bank to 35 percent and the answer flips entirely.
Which one for which lawn
Flat lawn, simple shape, tight budget: the Landroid M does everything the 305 does for several hundred pounds less, and the blade cost is trivial. Steep banks, terraces, a lawn that curves around slopes, or grass that stays wet into late morning: the 305 is the machine that finishes unattended, and the price stops looking like a premium once you have spent a third summer not rescuing a stranded robot from a fence line.
The question neither spec sheet answers is what happens at the seams of your particular garden, the pinch point between two lawns, the wet curve of a bank, the gravel edge a wheel can reach. That is where one of these two stops working, and which one depends entirely on a shape only you have walked across.
