Wormcast Compost from a Wiggly Wigglers Wormery Feeds a 5-Metre Raised Bed
A five-metre bed worked to 20 cm holds about 1,000 litres when it is one metre wide, and roughly 1.5 cubic metres in a wider layout. A Wiggly Wigglers wormery producing 4 to 6 kg of cast a month can help, provided the spring supply has been saved in advance.
Measuring cast against the bed
A Wiggly Wigglers Can-O-Worms, or a tiered wormery working in the same way, starts to become properly useful once the worm population has built up to about 500 to 1,000 grams of Dendrobaena and tiger worms. In warm weather, a colony of that size can process kitchen waste into roughly 4 to 6 kg of finished cast a month. Below 10 degrees Celsius, feeding drops away sharply, and a tray takes longer to turn dark and crumbly.
At one metre wide, five metres long and 20 cm deep, the bed holds about 1,000 litres of growing medium. If the same five-metre length is treated as a wider raised-bed job at the same working depth, the seasonal volume is roughly 1.5 cubic metres.
That does not call for wormcast through every part of the bed. The useful place is the top layer, where new roots and soil life are busy. A 1 to 2 cm dressing over five square metres uses about 50 to 100 litres across a season.
A single wormery only reaches that figure if harvests are kept back. Finished trays emptied into a lidded container as they become ready can build a workable amount over three or four months. If autumn and winter batches are used as soon as they are harvested, the spring reserve is usually far smaller than the bed area suggests.
Finished wormcast earns its space because it is concentrated. It commonly has more available nitrogen, phosphorus and beneficial microbial life than the compost from which it started. Mixed into the upper few centimetres, a narrow band sits close to active roots and avoids the scorching risk that comes with fresh manure.
Many gardeners do not weigh the cast from the wormery or measure the soil volume they plan to feed. If the trays are producing 5 kg a month and the bed is due a 100-litre seasonal dressing, spring planting relies on cast collected months earlier. Proprietary wormcast can make up the difference, although the final amount still depends on compost throughput and on how much kitchen waste actually reaches the trays.
Dahlia tubers in storage
After the first frost blackens dahlia foliage, most often from late October into November across temperate zones, the stems can be cut back to around 10 cm. A fork pushed in a full 30 cm from the crown is less likely to spear the tubers as the clump is lifted.
Once the clump is out of the ground, it needs to spend time upside down. A week inverted lets the hollow stems drain before storage. Two failures are common: moisture left in the clump encourages rot, while a store that is too warm and dry leaves the tubers shrivelled.
The dependable storage range is 5 to 10 degrees Celsius, in darkness. Barely damp vermiculite or dry compost in a ventilated box keeps the tubers packed without locking them into wet material. Monthly checks are worth doing, because a soft section can be removed with a clean blade before rot spreads to the crown.
The crown carries next year’s eye. Fat tubers without a sound crown do not save the plant. When stored tubers are potted up in spring, a wormcast-enriched mix supplies early feed as growth restarts, which suits dahlias during their first nitrogen-hungry flush.
A 20 percent wormcast blend by volume is enough for that potting mix. Above that, the mix can hold too much water for a tuber that has come out of dry storage.
Hostas like a narrow ring
Hostas are heavy feeders, and a spring mulch of wormcast worked lightly around the crown suits them before the leaves unfurl, while slug pressure is still building. A 2 cm ring kept clear of the emerging shoots feeds the plant through leaf expansion, and the same narrow band can be used around any hungry perennial in the bed.
Seed trays need a leaner start
A heated propagator holding the base at 18 to 21 degrees Celsius suits much spring sowing, though individual crops sit within narrower ranges. Tomatoes and peppers germinate reliably at 21 to 24 degrees; below 18 degrees they can stall long enough for seed to rot in cold, wet compost. Aubergines want the upper end of the range, close to 25 degrees, and can still take two to three weeks.
A thermostatic propagator such as the Vitopod allows the setting to be lowered once cotyledons open. That reduces the leggy stretch produced by warm, dim conditions, because after germination light governs seedling shape.
Half-hardy annuals such as cosmos and zinnia germinate quickly at 18 degrees. They are better sown later, in April, when a windowsill alone can do the job, leaving heated space free in February and March for slower, heat-hungry crops.
In seed compost, the same wormcast that suits a hosta crown works against small seeds. Even a pinch carries enough nutrient load to inhibit germination in crops needing a low-fertility, free-draining start. The concentration that makes cast useful as a spring feed makes it a poor seed medium.
Clematis cuts and wilted stems
A Felco No. 2, or the smaller No. 6 for tighter hands, gives clematis the clean angled cut it responds to well. The cut should sit roughly 5 mm above a bud and slope away from it, so water sheds from the wound.
Clematis wilt is caused by the fungus Calophoma clematidina. It enters through damaged tissue at or near the base of the plant. Blunt secateurs leave ragged edges and larger wounds, and those wounds heal more slowly.
When wilt appears, the treatment is removal. Affected stems are cut back to healthy tissue, often below soil level, then the material is destroyed and kept out of the compost heap. Large-flowered hybrids in Group 2 are the most susceptible, while species clematis and small-flowered types in Group 3 rarely show the disease.
A clematis that collapses in June can still regrow from the base in the same season if the crown survives. Planting 5 to 8 cm deeper than the original pot line puts dormant buds below ground as insurance. Wiping Felco blades with isopropyl alcohol between plants sterilises the metal and interrupts spore transfer, although that quick wipe is often missed when a border is being cut quickly.
Tiered wormery trays are for soft kitchen and garden waste. Wilted clematis stems cut out from below soil level are woody, diseased material and belong in the bin. Clean woody trimmings fit better in a cold heap or, once shredded, in a slow leaf-mould style pile.
A plant cut back below the soil in June may still push new growth if the crown is alive. The awkward uncertainty is whether enough dormant bud remains below ground to answer back.
