A 50 ml water test tells you whether HG Natural Stone Protector is worth applying to a granite worktop. The sealer works inside the pore network of the stone, so the five-stage job depends on clean granite, full drying, timed dwell, careful buffing, and a quiet cure.

How granite takes in liquid

Granite contains an interconnected pore network below the polished face. The shine comes from flattened quartz and feldspar crystals at the surface, while absorption depends on the quarry batch and the structure beneath that finish. A light Bianco Romano can draw in liquid faster than a dense Nero Assoluto, so one product specification has to cover a broad range of stone behaviour.

HG Natural Stone Protector is an impregnating sealer. Its active chemistry, commonly fluorochemical or silane-based, is carried into the pores by a solvent or water carrier. After application, the carrier evaporates and the active remains bonded inside the stone, creating water-repellent protection within the granite instead of forming a coating on top.

Check the worktop before committing product to it. Put roughly 50 ml of plain water on a clean, dry patch and start a timer. If the granite darkens within 10 to 15 minutes, it has enough open porosity to benefit from an impregnator. If the water stays beaded for half an hour with no darkening, a previous seal is still active and fresh product is likely to haze on the surface. Most kitchen granite fitted without a factory resin treatment absorbs within five minutes, and that is the kind of surface this method is meant for.

Step 1 and 2: remove residue, then let the stone dry

Clear the worktop completely before washing it. Dilute HG Natural Stone Power Cleaner at the bottle ratio, roughly 100 ml in 5 litres of warm water, then wipe the granite in sections of about 1 square metre. Ordinary kitchen sprays can leave surfactant or silicone films that interfere with penetration, so the degreasing wash carries much of the preparation work.

Rinse each section with clean water on a microfibre cloth. Change the rinse water as soon as it greys, because dragging contaminated water over the slab can leave residue in the same pores you are trying to open.

Drying deserves more time than the wipe-down. Moisture held by capillary action can sit below a surface that already feels dry, and that trapped water occupies pore space needed by the active sealer. After the final rinse, allow at least 24 hours in a ventilated room at 18 to 22 degrees Celsius.

A moisture meter pressed to the granite should read in the low single digits before the impregnator goes on. Fresh installations need a longer pause. Wet adhesive or grout below and around the slab can keep feeding moisture upward, so newly fitted granite may need two or three weeks before it is ready for sealing.

Step 3: apply the impregnator with enough contact time

Pour out a small pool of HG Natural Stone Protector and spread it with a flat foam applicator or a lint-free cloth. Keep the film even across the section you are treating, with no dry islands or thick puddles. The label dwell time is generally 10 to 20 minutes, and the product needs visible liquid contact during that period so it can wick into the pore structure.

Thirsty granite may pull the film down within minutes. Areas that turn matte have absorbed quickly, while neighbouring areas may still be wet. Add more product to those dry patches and keep a wet leading edge across the section, because uneven flash-drying can leave inconsistent protection.

Use airflow while the carrier is evaporating. Open a window and run the extractor, since the odour comes from the carrier solvent leaving the pores. Two thinner coats perform better than a single heavy flood: the first wets the upper pore structure, and the second can travel deeper once the initial carrier has started to clear.

Wait the inter-coat interval shown on the product instructions, usually 30 to 60 minutes, then apply the second film over the same area. Treat the worktop in manageable sections so the dwell and buffing windows remain under control.

Step 4: buff before residue hardens

Impregnators are made to finish with a bare stone surface. Any liquid left sitting on top at the end of the dwell period has to be removed before it dries into a film.

About 5 to 10 minutes before the dwell period ends, buff the whole area with a clean, dry microfibre cloth. Press firmly and keep going until the cloth starts to drag, the surface squeaks, and a raking light shows no streaks. Missed residue can polymerise into cloudy patches that resist normal cleaning and often require HG Natural Stone Power Cleaner followed by a fresh impregnation cycle.

Work first in overlapping circles. Finish with straight passes along the direction of any visible veining. Spend extra time at the edges, the sink cut-out lip, and the upstand junction, since liquid gathers in those lines and dries slowly.

A second buff 20 minutes later catches active material that sweats back out while the carrier finishes evaporating. That late wipe is small work, yet it often separates a clean polish from a faint smear that only appears in low side light.

Step 5: leave the seal to cure

Keep the worktop dry and out of use for 24 to 48 hours. During that curing period, the active chemistry completes its cross-linking inside the pores. Water or cooking oil on an uncured seal can displace the active before it has set, leaving weak spots in the protection.

What protection to expect

A well-applied impregnator changes absorbent granite into a water-repellent surface. Red wine, cooking oil, and other coloured spills should bead long enough to be wiped away before they soak in and stain.

Acid damage is different. Lemon juice, vinegar, and descaling agents can dull the polished crystal surface itself. That dull mark is etching, a physical change in the finish, so pore sealer cannot stop it. Heat sits in the same category of practical risk: a 220 degree pan placed directly on sealed granite can scorch the impregnator and damage the polish.

A dull ring under a wine bottle months after sealing is usually caused by acidic condensation around the bottle base. The mark occurs at the polished face even when the seal below is still repelling liquid. Staining and etching need separate responses: re-sealing helps when the stone has begun absorbing again, while an etched dull patch needs re-polishing with diamond pads.

Repeat the 50 ml water test every six to twelve months in the busy zone near the hob and sink. When water stops beading and darkens the granite within fifteen minutes, the active has worn thin in that traffic area. A single refresh coat, applied and buffed as in steps 3 and 4, restores protection.

The five-year service life assumes domestic use and pH-neutral cleaning. Daily use of acidic limescale removers can exhaust the protection much sooner. High-use zones rarely age uniformly, so the same slab can keep a strong seal in one patch and reopen in another.
