A 250g tub of Bar Keepers Friend usually costs about £3 to £5, and it can clear green-brown verdigris from a copper basin in under 30 minutes of work. The active ingredient is oxalic acid at roughly 5 to 10 percent, and it does the job in cases where people reach for bleach or ammonia first.

Test a 5cm patch before cleaning the whole basin

Start with the finish, because lacquered and unlacquered copper react very differently to Bar Keepers Friend. Mix a small slurry, dampen a cotton pad, and rub a 5cm square near the drain for 20 seconds. Bare copper will brighten almost at once.

A lacquered sink will stay much the same because the clear coat blocks the acid. Keep rubbing with the abrasive powder and the coating can turn hazy, leaving a cloudy film that cannot be polished clear again. That is the mistake that ruins many sealed basins.

Sinkology and Coppersmith, for example, sell many copper basins with either a baked lacquer or a living-finish wax. If the test area stays dull, leave the Bar Keepers Friend aside. Use warm water, one drop of pH-neutral washing-up liquid, and a microfibre cloth; if the lacquer has failed, the repair route is a fresh manufacturer-applied coating. The five-step method below belongs to sinks where the test patch flashed bright within those 20 seconds.

Five steps from oxidised copper to a reflective basin

Clear the rim first. Move every bottle, sponge, brush, and soap dish away from the basin, then flood the interior with hot water near 50C. That heat softens grease and lifts loose grime before the acid stage. Put a 5p-sized line of washing-up liquid on a non-scratch sponge and wash from the rim down toward the drain, so dirty runoff keeps moving away from areas already wiped. Rinse until the detergent is gone; a film left behind will streak under the acid and force you to repeat the polish.

Dry the copper with a cotton tea towel. Bar Keepers Friend needs to sit on the metal as a paste, and standing water on the basin weakens the oxalic acid before it can bite into the oxide layer. The surface should look matte-dry, with no beads of water around the drain or damp crescent around the overflow.

Make the paste in a small dish. Use roughly two teaspoons of powder and add water a few drops at a time until the mixture resembles single cream. It should spread with the cloth while still clinging to the vertical walls; adjust with a little more powder or water if it drags or runs. Work with a damp cloth in small circles, covering one quarter of the basin at a time so the paste stays active while you scrub.

Leave the paste on the copper for 60 seconds. Oxalic acid continues to etch while it sits, and thin-gauge copper can shift from bright to scoured grey if the dwell time runs long. Scrub each quarter with light pressure, following the grain where it is visible, then continue around the basin before the first treated area dries.

Rinse with warm water until every trace of powder has gone. Dried residue can leave a chalky white bloom that looks like fresh tarnish by the next day. Dry the basin with a clean cotton cloth, then take a second dry cloth and buff hard in tight circles. The reflective finish develops during those final minutes of dry-cloth work, and the effort there decides whether the result is a satin sheen or a mirror.

Why oxalic acid beats vinegar on copper

Vinegar and salt will dissolve copper oxide, but ordinary household vinegar is weak and slow, and it tends to bite unevenly, so you end up with blotchy patches that catch the light under kitchen downlights. Bar Keepers Friend takes a different route. Its oxalic acid lifts copper oxide and iron staining in a single pass, and the powder carries a fine abrasive that smooths out the pitting plain acid leaves behind. Ketchup is essentially another mild-acid trick, mixing the acetic acid of vinegar with the citric acid in tomatoes, which is why it asks for far more contact time and still finishes rough.

The grit in the powder matters every bit as much as the acid does, and the clever part is how it is chosen. The mineral in Bar Keepers Friend is feldspar, hard enough to shear off the soft oxide layer you want gone but softer than quartz, which would scratch the copper itself. Sitting in that narrow window is exactly why the powder on a non-scratch sponge clears tarnish without gouging, where steel wool dragged through vinegar leaves a track of visible scratches.

When only the drain area needs work

A living-finish copper sink is designed to darken. If the warm brown tone is the reason you bought it and only the drain area has gone green or patchy, treat that stain alone with a damp cloth and a pinch of powder.

The surfaces closest to the sink are worth checking because copper runoff and limescale do not stop at the plughole. Travertine, whether on a floor or splashback, drinks water through open pores unless a penetrating sealer fills them. Lithofin MN Stain-Stop and HG Natural Stone Protector are examples of products that soak in and cure over 24 hours. The test is simple: drip water on a sealed travertine tile and watch what it does, because water that beads on the surface tells you the seal is holding while water that darkens the stone has already soaked in, and in a wet zone behind a sink that usually means the tile wants a fresh coat every two to three years.

Metro tile usually fails at the joints long before the glazed face gives trouble. Standard cement grout is porous, so it absorbs copper runoff and limescale from washing-up splashes and can turn grey within months. Epoxy grout such as Mapei Kerapoxy cures into a non-absorbent resin, which is why fitters increasingly specify it for the 100mm band directly behind a basin even when cement grout fills the rest of the wall. If cement grout is already in place, a penetrating grout sealer applied along each joint with a 6mm applicator brush gives much of the same protection without a re-grout.

Keeping bare copper bright

A polished bare-copper basin starts oxidising as soon as it dries, and the speed depends on what touches it. Lemon, tomato, vinegar, and other acidic food waste can etch bright spots within hours. Alkaline soaps tend to leave a duller, more even film over several days. A weekly wash with washing-up liquid followed by a thorough dry-off keeps the basin about 90 percent of the way back to the polished state and can push a full Bar Keepers Friend treatment to a month or longer.

There is another way to live with the metal: allow a deliberate patina to build, then seal that colour with a thin coat of microcrystalline wax such as Renaissance Wax once the copper reaches the tone you want. The wax usually gives three to six months of stability before it wears thin around the high-traffic drain zone and needs a fresh pass. What none of this settles is where on a living finish the darkening around the drain stops reading as the colour you chose, since the same brown tone can look deliberate on one basin and overdue for a clean on the next.
