Osmo Polyx Oil vs Liberon Finishing Oil for a Hardwearing Worktop Surface

Osmo Polyx-Oil 3032 and Liberon Finishing Oil ask for very different schedules on a 3 metre oak worktop. One is a two-coat hardwax system with an 8 to 10 hour recoat window; the other is a tung oil based penetrating finish that can take five coats near a sink.

The 12-hour gap that can decide the job

Osmo Polyx-Oil 3032 lists a recoat interval of 8 to 10 hours at 23 degrees Celsius and 50 percent relative humidity. Each coat has to go on thin, then be worked into the grain rather than left sitting wet on the surface. A two-coat worktop finished in an evening can be touch-dry by the next afternoon and ready for light use the following morning.

Liberon Finishing Oil, a tung oil based penetrating product, asks for 6 hours between coats. On a worktop close to a sink, the recommended build is 4 to 5 coats, with 24 to 48 hours before the surface meets water.

Five Liberon coats applied at one coat per evening take up most of a working week before the timber is genuinely waterproof. Osmo reaches full cure in around 10 to 14 days, yet it becomes usable earlier because the hardwax sits partly on the surface and partly in the grain. In a kitchen with no spare worktop and a sink already plumbed in, coat count can settle the choice before any water test begins.

Water under a glass

Leave a wet glass on freshly oiled oak overnight and the finishes give different reports. Osmo Polyx-Oil cures to a microporous hardwax surface that resists a standing water ring once the full 3032 system has hardened. Its carnauba and candelilla wax content creates a closed surface that beads water for the first minute, then starts to take it in slowly if the spill is left alone. Wiped within a few minutes, the surface shows no mark.

Liberon Finishing Oil protects through penetration, so the result depends heavily on the number of coats the timber has taken. Three coats on end grain near a Belfast sink can darken under a persistent drip. Five coats, fully cured, cope with routine splashing, although pooling still needs wiping away. Tung oil is genuinely water repellent, which explains its long use on boat decks and chopping boards, but that resistance comes from the quantity of oil absorbed into the timber and polymerised there.

The strip of timber between a tap and a hob is usually the wettest part of the run. In that zone, two thin coats of Osmo can produce a sealed face quickly. Liberon can reach comparable day-to-day resistance, but only after the wood has been fed enough oil to make the surface thoroughly saturated.

A 3 metre run of oak

Take a single oak worktop measuring 3 metres by 0.62 metres. The top face is roughly 1.86 square metres, before allowing for a 38mm front edge and two end grains.

Osmo quotes coverage of about 24 square metres per litre per coat for Polyx-Oil 3032. Application is usually with a 150mm Osmo floor brush or a microfibre roller, and the thinness of the coat matters. Across 1.86 square metres plus edges, call the real area 2.4 square metres. Two coats consume roughly 200 millilitres.

A 750ml tin, priced around 28 to 34 GBP, finishes that worktop with most of the tin left for the annual refresh. The spare material matters because a hardwax surface normally benefits from a full thin renewal coat rather than repeated heavy patching.

Liberon coverage sits nearer 18 to 20 square metres per litre. It is applied with a lint-free cloth, then wiped back after 10 to 15 minutes so surplus oil does not stay wet on the surface. Five coats over the same 2.4 square metres draw around 600 to 700 millilitres.

A 500ml tin at roughly 12 to 16 GBP will not complete five coats on that example. A litre is the honest quantity for the job. The headline tin price favours Liberon, while the in-use cost narrows once the coat count is counted properly.

End grain changes the arithmetic for both products. Each end drinks oil at two to three times the rate of the face, so both ends deserve an extra wipe whatever finish is being used.

Heat, knives, and repair

Neither finish survives a pan straight off the hob. Osmo and Liberon can both scorch or cloud under direct heat above roughly 80 degrees Celsius, so a trivet is non-negotiable with either finish.

Knife cuts are less equal. A cut through the Osmo hardwax exposes bare timber and breaks the surface seal in that line. The repair is local sanding with 240 grit, a clean wipe, and one fresh coat feathered across the area. The wax re-melts slightly into the surrounding film, and the patch blends within a coat.

Liberon takes a knife score more forgivingly because there is no surface film to break, only saturated timber. A light rub with the original oil on a cloth can restore the scored line in minutes. Sanding is needed only if the grain has lifted.

Osmo worktops in a busy kitchen usually want a full thin maintenance coat across the whole surface every 12 months, using Osmo Maintenance Oil 3079 or another coat of 3032. Liberon worktops allow local top-ups on demand, often only on the worn strip in front of the sink. Over five years, a Liberon surface may receive ten small interventions; an Osmo surface receives five whole-top refreshes, each taking an evening.

Thick application creates trouble with both finishes. An Osmo coat laid on too heavily can stay tacky for days because the wax cannot oxidise through its own bulk. The fix is to wipe the excess back with white spirit and restart with a thinner coat. Liberon left thick and unbuffed gives a sticky, streaked surface for the same reason: surplus oil remains where the wood has nothing left to absorb.

Sheen and touch

Osmo 3032 in its clear satin grade lifts the grain slightly and leaves a soft sheen. Liberon Finishing Oil dries closer to a low matte and feels more like raw oiled timber under the hand.

Fit the finish to the kitchen

A self-build kitchen fitted over a single weekend, with the sink already connected and no replacement surface available, is well suited to Osmo. Two coats, light use the next morning, and a sealed surface make the timetable easier to control. The annual whole-top refresh is the price of that speed, and it is a known evening of work each spring.

A renovator living with the kitchen during the work may find Liberon easier to live with later. A coat each evening for a week, with patient wiping back, gives a deeper saturated finish from five coats and a simpler spot-repair routine afterwards. The tung oil base rewards that slower build with a surface that takes knocks and scores without showing a hard edge.

Species and cut can override the neat product comparison. European oak and beech accept either product cleanly. Oily tropical timbers such as iroko or teak resist penetrating oils and can stay tacky under Liberon for far longer than the tin suggests, because the timber’s own oils block absorption; these woods take an Osmo wax film more reliably. End-grain-heavy worktops, including butcher block construction with the grain standing up, drink penetrating oil fast and suit Liberon’s wipe-on, wipe-back method, since the thirsty zones can simply be fed until they stop absorbing.

The sink strip is the part that keeps the argument alive: should it be protected by a quick film that needs whole-top renewal, or by a slow build of oil that accepts small repairs later?
