Lay Quick-Step Vinyl Click Planks Over Concrete in 7 Steps for 40% Faster Fitting

A 2mm height tolerance over a 2-metre span can decide whether Quick-Step Livyn or Alpha planks stay locked or start peaking at the joints. The method below puts moisture testing, levelling, layout, and edge clearance ahead of the clicking work, so a flat concrete slab does more of the job before the first plank is lowered.

Concrete poured less than 60 days before fitting still holds construction moisture deep in the slab, and rigid-core LVT traps the vapour rising beneath it. So before any Quick-Step plank leaves the carton, run a calcium chloride test or take a hygrometer reading with a Tramex CMEX II to establish the moisture vapour emission rate. Quick-Step’s specification for the Livyn ranges permits installation over slabs reading up to 75% relative humidity by the insert-probe method, or 5 lbs per 1000 sq ft per 24 hours by the calcium chloride method. Anything above those limits calls for extra curing time or a liquid-applied moisture barrier, for instance an epoxy membrane troweled across the surface.

Skip that reading and the click joints inherit a problem no underlay can solve. Moisture sitting below rigid-core vinyl can drive the assembly through seasonal swelling, particularly where the floor has been pinned tight at the edges.

Read the slab before laying out planks

If the surface still carries laitance, the weak cement skin that forms during finishing, grind a small patch. Laitance powders under a screwdriver tip and will later stop adhesive-backed transition strips from bonding. A diamond cup wheel on an angle grinder, run with dust extraction, takes the surface back to sound concrete in a few passes.

Level is the next check. Drag a 2-metre straightedge across the slab in a grid pattern and mark any gap over 3mm under the edge. Quick-Step rigid planks bridge small dips well enough, but a hollow exceeding 3mm flexes the click joint every time weight crosses it, and that repeated flexing can split the locking lip.

For depressions, pour a self-levelling compound such as Mapei Ultraplan or ARDEX K 15, mixed to a pourable consistency and spread with a smoothing trowel. These compounds reach walkable hardness in two to three hours and cure fully overnight, so the prep day can close with a flat, dust-free surface ready for layout.

Acclimatise the cartons

Stack the unopened Quick-Step cartons flat in the installation room for 48 hours, with the room held between 18 and 27 degrees Celsius. Rigid-core SPC planks expand and contract far less than older flexible vinyl, but the locking geometry sits tight enough that a plank fitted cold and warmed afterward can bow at the centre of a long run.

Keep the heating at its normal level while the cartons rest in the room, letting the planks settle to their working dimension. Where underfloor heating is present, bring the system up to operating temperature gradually across several days before fitting, hold it there, then drop it to around 18 degrees on fitting day so the slab stays steady under the new floor.

Set the first row from the longest wall

Measure the room width and divide it by the plank width to find where the final row lands. A final row under 50mm reads as an offcut and clicks together badly. When that happens, trim the first row narrower and balance both sides of the room before the first plank locks home.

Snap a chalk line parallel to the longest straight wall, set back by the plank width plus a 10mm expansion gap, and work toward the opposite wall from that line.

Walls are rarely square. Where the wall bows, hold a plank against the start wall and scribe its profile, then cut the first row to follow the wall while keeping the leading edge straight on the chalk line.

Place 10mm spacers every 400mm around the full perimeter, door frames and pipe collars included. That gap is the floor’s movement allowance. Skirting or scotia covers it later; sealant that bonds the edge to the wall locks the floor and stops it sliding.

Stagger the end joints by at least 300mm from row to row. The offcut from one row can open the next if it runs longer than 300mm. This holds waste near 5% and scatters the seam pattern so the floor shows no repeating stripes under raking light.

Lock the long edge first

Quick-Step’s Uniclic system joins along the long edge at roughly a 25-degree angle. Present the new plank’s tongue into the groove of the laid plank, push forward, and lower it flat until the lip snaps into place.

On most current ranges, the end joints drop-lock vertically once the long edge is engaged. Angle the long side in first, then press the short end down with the heel of your hand. A tapping block and rubber mallet close any stubborn long-edge gap. Strike the block only, since direct impact on the exposed plank edge chips the locking lip easily.

A flat slab and a balanced layout let the planks seat cleanly. Across an open floor, one fitter can lay 15 to 20 square metres in an hour. The time gained over a poorly prepared slab comes from cutting out the stops for shimming, recutting, or unclicking and reseating planks that refuse to sit flush.

At pipes, drill a hole 20mm wider than the pipe diameter. Cut a wedge from the hole out to the plank edge, fit the plank, then glue the wedge back with a bead of PVA. Undercut door architraves with a flush-cut saw laid flat on a plank offcut, so the flooring slides underneath and the cut disappears.

Keep the tool kit lean

A sharp utility knife scores and snaps planks cleanly against a steel rule. An electric multi-tool handles undercuts and architraves. A standard rectangular room needs no saw bench.

Treat thresholds and fixed objects as breaks in the field

Doorways between rooms need an expansion break. Rigid LVT laid as one continuous field across a doorway can buckle when two adjoining rooms expand toward each other. Fit a T-bar profile in the threshold and leave the 10mm gap on both sides beneath it.

Quick-Step’s Incizo profile cuts to four functions from one length: T-bar, end, reducer, and stair nosing. You score the profile along its printed guide channel, which keeps the threshold colour matched to the floor.

The expansion gap holds at every fixed object. Kitchen islands bolted to the slab, radiator pipes, and staircase newel posts all interrupt the floating field, and each wants its own collar of clearance. A floor locked tight against three walls and one heavy fitted unit has no release for summer expansion, so pressure builds at the weakest joint and lifts it.

A slab that tested near the upper moisture limit can cycle seasonally. Even a sealed rigid core sits over trapped vapour, and that layer can expand the floor assembly by a fraction. The perimeter gap only absorbs that movement when it stays a true 10mm all the way round and remains empty.

Pin scotia beading into the skirting so the planks slide beneath it. A bead fixed through the plank into the slab kills the floating floor and leaves the joint open to peaking by the following summer.

Read the offcut pile

Count the planks trimmed under 300mm that could not be reused. A square room with a balanced layout keeps that number low. A room where the first row went down full-width before anyone checked the final row sees the pile climb.

The short waste also marks where the room shape fought the layout. Those awkward pieces are usually the ones cut for bowed walls and doorway returns, where whether they get reused turns on shape as much as length. What the pile will not tell you is which of those returns will be the first to feel the slab’s next humid spell.
