Lay a Herringbone Backsplash With Fired Earth Tiles in 8 Steps for a Sharp Pattern
A 45-degree herringbone run across a 1.8-metre kitchen wall needs roughly 12 percent more tile than a straight stack, because every perimeter cut is a diagonal offcut you cannot reuse. The 45-degree start line decides everything
Most herringbone failures trace back to a baseline drawn parallel to the worktop. Fired Earth’s 7.5 by 15 cm bricks weave at either 45 or 90 degrees to horizontal, and the 45-degree version, the one that reads as a true zigzag, demands a guide line struck at exactly half the diagonal. Snap a horizontal chalk line 200 mm above a hardwax oil oak worktop, then use a 600 mm spirit level and a builder’s square to set a second line at 45 degrees crossing it. The intersection is tile one’s bottom corner. Get this off by two degrees and the drift compounds across twelve courses until the top row meets the wall unit at a visibly wrong angle.
Mark the centre of the wall, not the centre of the worktop, because cooker hoods and window reveals rarely sit symmetrically. A 1.8 m wall tiled in 75 mm-wide bricks running point-up will show roughly 24 visible chevron peaks. Dry-lay the first three rows on the floor against your chalk lines before any adhesive touches the wall. This dry run is where you discover whether the left and right perimeter cuts land as awkward 15 mm slivers, in which case you shift the whole field 30 mm sideways to balance the offcuts.
What you stage before opening the adhesive
Fired Earth’s glazed bricks are 8 to 10 mm thick and fired to a hardness that blunts a manual scoring wheel within a single kitchen. A bench wet saw with a continuous-rim diamond blade, the Rubi DC-250 class or equivalent, cuts the diagonal perimeter pieces cleanly where a snap cutter would chip the glaze edge. Keep the following within arm’s reach: a 6 mm notched trowel, 2 mm tile spacers (1.5 mm if you want a tighter Fired Earth look), a rubber float, two buckets, large sponges, and a bag of mould resistant grout rated for splash zones.
Use a ready-mixed white adhesive only on sealed plaster; on bare or skimmed board, a cement-based S1 flexible powder adhesive grips the heavier glazed body far better. Mix to a stiff peanut-butter consistency, not pourable. A 1.8 by 0.6 m field, around 1.1 square metres including the diagonal waste, takes roughly 4 to 5 kg of mixed adhesive and a single 5 kg bag of grout for 2 mm joints. Cover the wall in patches no larger than half a square metre at a time, because the open time of most flexible adhesives drops to under 15 minutes in a warm kitchen and skinned-over adhesive will not bond.
The eight steps, in order
- Strike the horizontal datum 200 mm above the worktop and the 45-degree guide crossing it, checked with the spirit level on both axes.
- Dry-lay three courses against the lines, mark perimeter cuts, and adjust the field sideways to kill any sliver under 20 mm.
- Trowel adhesive onto a half-square-metre patch and comb it to a consistent ridge with the 6 mm notch held at 45 degrees.
- Bed the first brick on the intersection, press with a slight twist, then set its mirror partner to form the first V.
- Build outward and upward, dropping a 2 mm spacer at every joint and checking every fourth tile against the guide line.
- Cut the perimeter diagonals on the wet saw last, easing each to a 1 mm reveal off the adjacent wall or cabinet.
- Leave the adhesive 24 hours before grouting, longer if the room sits below 10 degrees.
- Force grout diagonally across the joints with the float, clean the haze in two passes, and shape the lines with a damp sponge.
Step four is non-negotiable in sequence. The pattern propagates from a single correctly placed pair, and a half-millimetre lean in tile one becomes a 4 mm gap by row eight.
Grout colour does more visual work than the tile
A brilliant-white tile with charcoal grout reads as a graphic grid; the same tile with a colour-matched off-white grout reads as a soft continuous surface. On a herringbone field the joint length per square metre is roughly 30 percent higher than a straight stack, so grout choice carries disproportionate weight. Mapei Ultracolor Plus and BAL Micromax2 both offer mould resistant grout lines with built-in fungicide and water-repellent polymers, which matters directly behind a hob where steam and grease cycle daily.
Mix grout in small batches. A herringbone wall has so many short joint segments that working time fragments fast, and a stiffening grout drags rather than fills, leaving pinholes that trap moisture. Hold the float at 45 degrees to the joints and work diagonally, the only direction that packs every chevron junction without pulling grout back out of the one beside it. After the first sponge pass, wait for the surface haze to bloom, usually 20 to 30 minutes, then buff with a dry microfibre cloth. Sealing a cement-based grout with an impregnating sealer two weeks later, once it has fully cured, keeps the joints near a hob from yellowing within the first year.
A worked tile-count example
Take the 1.8 m wide by 0.6 m high field again. Net area is 1.08 square metres. Fired Earth’s 7.5 by 15 cm brick covers 0.01125 square metre each, so the field needs 96 tiles laid flat. Add the herringbone diagonal-cut wastage, which on a 45-degree weave runs 10 to 15 percent against the 5 to 8 percent of a brick-bond layout, and you buy for 1.24 square metres, about 110 tiles, then round to a full box. A typical Fired Earth box of this format holds 44 tiles, so three boxes, 132 tiles, leaves a sensible 20-tile reserve for future breakage matching, since glaze batches drift and a replacement bought two years later rarely matches the original firing.
Adhesive and grout scale the same way. At 4 kg of adhesive per square metre with a 6 mm notch, 1.24 square metres needs 5 kg mixed, so one 20 kg bag covers the job four times over and the surplus stays usable if kept dry. Grout at roughly 1.5 kg per square metre for 2 mm joints on this format means under 2 kg used, well inside a single 5 kg bag. The cost asymmetry is deliberate: tile is the expensive line and the one you must over-order, while consumables you buy once and barely dent.
Where the diagonal meets a fitted edge
The ugliest herringbone backsplashes are the ones that died at the edges. A perfect field running into a ragged perimeter against the wall units undoes every hour spent on the weave.
The cuts nobody photographs
Perimeter diagonals are the quiet test of the whole job. Each chevron meeting the top of the splash, the underside of a wall cabinet, or the return into a window reveal needs a cut at the precise mirror angle of the tile beside it, and the wet saw is the only honest way to hold that line on a fired glaze. Mark each piece in place with a chinagraph pencil rather than measuring in the abstract, because real walls bow and real cabinets sit out of true by two or three millimetres over a metre.
Leave a consistent 1 to 2 mm expansion gap where the tile meets the worktop and the cabinets, then fill it with a colour-matched flexible silicone, not grout. Grout in that junction cracks within months as the worktop and the wall move at different rates with temperature and load. The same logic applies if the splash returns against a limewashed or painted surface: the tile edge wants a soft sealant line that flexes, and a bullnose or a slim brushed-brass trim hides the cut glaze edge where a tile turns an external corner.
The open question every herringbone wall leaves is what happens at the single tile that meets three different edges at once, the corner where worktop, cabinet, and reveal converge, and whether you cut it as one improbable polygon or fake the junction with two pieces and a hairline of silicone.
