Lay a Chevron Floor With Havwoods Engineered Oak in 9 Steps for 40% Faster Fitting
A Havwoods engineered oak chevron run can drift visibly from a 1mm mistake in the first row. This sequence keeps the spine true, trims fitting time by around 40%, and covers the Osmo Polyx oil stage that often causes trouble.
Use the centre line before the wall line
Many fitters are tempted by the longest wall. With chevron, the room is read through the central spine of the arrows, so that line has to be established first. Snap a chalk line along the exact length of the room, then set a second line square to it at the point where the first two boards meet at their 45 or 60 degree apex.
Havwoods supplies engineered oak chevron boards as left and right pairs with the angle already machined. You do not cut the angle on site. The end cuts happen only at the room edges.
Starting from the centre buys back time because any small accumulated movement is divided toward both sides of the room. The border cuts then stay visually balanced, instead of finishing with a thin sliver along one wall and a much wider strip along the other. Dry-lay the first eight boards down the spine before adhesive is opened. Put a 2m straightedge over the apex points and check that each V lands on the same line. If that first run moves, the whole floor follows it.
The subfloor number that governs the job
Engineered oak parquet in a glue-down chevron layout needs a subfloor within 3mm over a 2m span. Short boards, often around 600mm, show humps quickly because each piece has less length to bridge a high spot.
Work across the screed with a 2m aluminium straightedge in a grid and pencil-mark every gap. Any area beyond 3mm needs a fibre-reinforced levelling compound, followed by the cure time stated by the manufacturer. For a 5mm pour, that is usually overnight.
Moisture comes next. A sand-cement screed must be below 75% relative humidity, or below 2% by the carbide CM method, before timber is bonded to it. Trapped moisture can lift boards at the tongue within a season. On newer screed, use a hygrometer sealed under a mat for 72 hours so the reading reflects the slab condition beneath the surface.
Anhydrite screed has its own preparation step. The laitance layer has to be removed with a 40-grit mechanical sand, then vacuumed thoroughly. If that layer remains, the adhesive bonds to dust and the floor can shear under foot traffic. Chevron makes a weak bond more obvious because the diagonal joints flex independently.
Adhesive choice and trowel notch
A flexible MS-polymer adhesive is the usual choice for engineered oak over screed. It grips the board while allowing the small seasonal movement that oak always makes.
Spread only the area that can be covered within the open time printed on the tub, commonly 40 to 50 minutes at 20C. Once the surface skins, boards can sit on a crust and later sound hollow under heel.
The trowel notch decides how much adhesive remains under each board. For Havwoods engineered chevron between 14mm and 20mm thick, a B3 or B11 notched trowel held at 60 degrees should leave the right bed. Press a board into place, lift it, and look at the back. The ridges should be flattened into near-complete transfer across the underside. Patchy contact means the notch is too fine or the adhesive has started to skin.
Clean squeeze-out from the oak face straight away with a barely damp cloth. Cured MS-polymer on raw or oiled oak leaves a shiny smear, and sanding rarely removes it cleanly without changing the surrounding surface.
A timing example from a 20 square metre room
On a 20 square metre room, cutting every chevron angle on site can take roughly four hours before bonding begins. With Havwoods pre-cut left and right pairs, plus the centre-line dry-lay completed first, the field can be bonded in about two and a half hours, with another hour for perimeter cuts. The time saving sits near 40% because the angle-cutting stage disappears and the true spine reduces repeated alignment checks.
Expansion gaps and perimeter cutting
Leave a 10mm to 15mm expansion gap at every wall, pipe, and threshold. Oak moves across its width as humidity changes, and a chevron floor trapped tight at the perimeter can peak in the centre of the room by August. Skirting or beaded trim covers the gap, so it has no visual cost.
Each perimeter board needs its own measurement. Chevron borders rarely repeat exactly, because every diagonal meets the wall at a slightly different point. Use a sliding bevel to capture the wall angle, transfer it to the board, and cut it on a mitre saw with a fine 60-tooth blade to reduce chipping on lacquered or oiled edges.
Door casings need a different finish. Undercut the architrave with a flush-cut saw and slide the board beneath it. That small recess gives the edge the look of fitted joinery, while a board scribed around the casing often draws attention to the cut.
The oil finish stage that gets rushed
Raw or brushed boards need a finish that can stand up to wear, and Osmo Polyx oil is commonly used for that stage. Two thin coats are more reliable than one heavy coat. A thick application can sit on the surface, stay tacky for days, and collect footprints and dust.
Apply the first coat with a microfibre pad or a fine roller. Work in 2 square metre areas so the surface can be controlled before it starts to settle. Wipe away surplus within ten minutes. The oil should sink into the grain, and the chevron joints should be checked for pooling before moving on.
Allow the first coat to cure for 8 to 10 hours at room temperature with decent airflow. After that, denib lightly with 320-grit abrasive or a fine grey pad before the second coat. Cold slows the cure sharply. Below 15C, the oil can remain soft for more than a day and mark easily.
The V of each chevron joint deserves extra attention. Oil gathers there more readily than it does on a straight plank edge. Use raking light after wiping back to catch any bead sitting proud. Once cured, that bead becomes a glossy line through an otherwise matt floor and has to be removed carefully by hand sanding.
A limewash can sit under Polyx when the aim is a pale Scandinavian look. Brush a thin pigmented base into the grain, let it dry fully, then apply the clear oil over the top to lock it in. The order matters because sealed timber will not give the limewash a surface to key into. Reverse the sequence and the white can pull away at the first mop.
Factory-finished boards remove this finishing stage from the room, although the cutting, adhesive control, expansion gaps, and moisture checks still matter just as much. Raw and brushed boards leave more control over tone, but they also make cleanliness and cure time part of the installation itself.
Where chevron helps a north-facing room
A north-facing room gets no direct sun, so the same oak can look colder and flatter than it would in a south-facing space. Chevron creates a continuous zigzag that gives a stronger directional line than herringbone, helping a dim room feel longer and more deliberate.
A mid-brown oiled oak works better in that setting when the wall colour has warmth. Farrow and Ball north-facing shades with yellow or red undertones can stop the floor reading grey. Cool grey walls with cool oak underfoot can make the room feel clinical.
Acclimatisation before fitting
Leave Havwoods boxes flat and unopened in the actual room for 5 to 7 days. That lets the oak settle to the humidity of the house before installation begins. Boxes kept in a cold garage and fitted the next morning are a common route to gapping during the first winter.
Cleaning during the first month
An oiled chevron floor should be cleaned with restraint. Damp-mop using a wrung cloth and a pH-neutral wood soap, and avoid steam mops because steam drives water into the joints and can lift the oil. During the first 30 days after the final Osmo coat, the surface is still building hardness, so heavy rugs should stay off it while the cure develops. Felt pads under furniture keep bare metal feet from scoring the oil.
Dust while the oil cures
Dust is the awkward part of the finishing stage. Oil remains slightly receptive for hours, and fine grit from newly sanded skirting or a nearby IKEA storage build can settle into the surface and become part of the finish.
The sequence of oiling and remaining joinery work is therefore worth deciding before the first board is bonded. That leaves one awkward detail hanging over the whole job: the floor finish and the remaining joinery both want the cleanest part of the room.
