Karndean Van Gogh vs Amtico Spacia for a Kitchen Vinyl Plank Floor

Amtico Spacia planks in wood formats measure 184.2mm by 1219.2mm, while Karndean Van Gogh wood planks use the current 1219mm by 178mm format. The two boards come out almost the same length, with Amtico just over 6mm wider. That geometry decides cut waste before anyone opens the pattern discussion. A 3.2m galley run takes a 1219mm Amtico plank in two full lengths plus one short cut, and Van Gogh lays out in essentially the same length rhythm; the extra rows come from Karndean’s narrower width. Every extra row creates another long seam where spilled liquid can linger if the butt joint is loose, though both brands specify tight butt joints that resist splashes when the floor goes down to instruction.

Both ranges carry a 0.55mm wear layer, the figure that governs surface resistance to scuffs from dropped pans and dragged bar stools. Because the construction matches on that point, abrasion resistance in a domestic kitchen is effectively level between them. Where they differ visually is embossing depth and the print film sitting beneath the clear protective layer.

Adhesive systems and what your subfloor demands

Karndean specifies its own K91 acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive for Van Gogh over most subfloors, with the two-part K95 or a moisture-suppressing primer where residual moisture in a screed sits above 75 percent relative humidity. Amtico runs a parallel system with Amtico Spray Adhesive and wet-lay adhesives, plus the recommendation to use a latex smoothing compound over any uneven base. Both brands require the same basic preparation: the subfloor has to be flat to within roughly 3mm over a 2m straightedge, dry, and free of old adhesive residue.

Moisture carries more weight in a kitchen than in a lounge. Dishwashers leak, washing machines under a worktop vibrate and occasionally weep, and a screed that has not fully cured pushes vapour up through the glue line. A liquid damp-proof membrane such as F. Ball Stopgap F76 or Ardex DPM 1 C-R, applied before the smoothing compound, is the standard remedy on both systems where a moisture meter reads high. Skip it and you get the common failure: planks lifting at the edges eighteen months after an otherwise clean installation.

For warm-water and electric underfloor heating, both Van Gogh and Spacia are rated up to a finished surface temperature of 27 degrees Celsius. Push past that limit and the plasticisers in the vinyl and the adhesive bond both degrade over time. The room thermostat has to hold the floor surface under that ceiling.

The grease film around the hob

Within a metre or two of a hob, a thin airborne grease film settles on the floor. Over months it dulls the surface sheen and traps grit, which then works as an abrasive underfoot. Karndean and Amtico both counter this with a factory-applied polyurethane surface treatment, PU on the Amtico and a comparable coating on Van Gogh, to weaken the bond between grease and the vinyl surface.

Karndean sells a two-step system: Refresh cleaner for routine mopping and Remove for periodic stripping of built-up residue. Amtico offers Floorcare Maintainer and Floorcare Stripper in the same roles. A general supermarket floor cleaner can leave a polymer film on either surface, which gives grease something to cling to and quietly undoes the intended finish. Grout-lined tile-format vinyl needs separate care. A product such as HG grout cleaner is formulated for cementitious grout lines, so it belongs only on grouted stone-effect ranges and should not be pressed into service as a general vinyl wash.

Design range and grout options

Amtico Spacia carries a broader stone and abstract catalogue alongside the wood decors, and the tile formats can be laid with a coloured grout strip to mimic ceramic. Van Gogh leans harder into realistic timber embossing, with Reclaimed and Distressed oak decors using deep grain texture that reads convincingly underfoot.

A worked cost and waste comparison

Take a real kitchen: 4.1m by 2.8m, a total floor area of 11.48 square metres. Remove a central island footprint of 1.2m by 0.6m and the laid floor drops to roughly 10.76 square metres. Both brands recommend ordering 10 percent over for cuts and future repairs, so the order quantity lands near 11.84 square metres either way.

Van Gogh at 1219mm by 178mm covers just over 0.216 square metres per plank. That works out to roughly 50 planks for the laid area, before any allowance for spare material. With the 10 percent uplift, the order sits at about 55 planks, subject to pack size and decor. The narrower width creates more rows than Spacia, and a room with an island, appliance recesses and base-unit returns can push real-world waste above the nominal 10 percent. Budgeting 12 to 13 percent overage on the Van Gogh format is more honest for that kind of room.

Spacia at 184.2mm by 1219.2mm covers the same floor with fewer, larger planks, around 48 boards across the laid area before spare material. The long format means fewer transverse cuts than a short board would create, and offcuts from one plank length can often start the next row. Waste therefore tends to sit closer to the nominal 10 percent in a rectangular kitchen.

On adhesive, one 5-litre tub of Karndean K91 covers roughly 25 to 30 square metres depending on trowel notch, so a single tub clears this kitchen with margin. Amtico’s spray canister coverage is quoted per can, and a single unit handles a room this size.

The headline material cost between the two ranges is close enough that plank layout and waste allowance can shift the final invoice more than the per-square-metre price does. Installation labour follows the difficulty of the cuts, and the wider Spacia plank will usually go faster around a rectangular island.

Expansion, thresholds and the transition to other floors

Glue-down LVT bonds fully to the subfloor and moves with it. It does not use the perimeter expansion gap required by a click-lock floating floor, which is precisely why moisture and flatness preparation matter so much. Where kitchen vinyl meets carpet in a hallway or engineered oak in an adjoining dining room, a threshold strip carries the level change and hides the cut edge.

Matching a satin sheen on the vinyl to an adjacent engineered oak floor finish is worth sorting before the order goes in. A high-gloss oak lacquer beside a matt-embossed Van Gogh oak plank can look wrong even when the wood tones agree, because the eye catches the reflectance difference at the threshold before it registers colour. Amtico and Karndean both publish sheen levels for their decors, and checking those figures against the oak finish sample avoids a jarring join in daylight.

Appliance recesses need their own thought. Running the vinyl under a freestanding dishwasher or fridge keeps the floor at a consistent level if the appliance is pulled out for repair, but the point load of a full fridge on a small foot can indent softer LVT over years. Both brands rate their planks for domestic point loads, and a load-spreading pad under a heavy appliance foot can be the difference between a flat floor and a permanent dimple.

The zone directly in front of an oven door is the one square metre that neither the waste maths nor the plank-width comparison touches. That patch takes repeated thermal cycling and the odd splash of hot fat, year after year, on the same bonded joints. Anyone weighing Van Gogh against Spacia has plenty of data on width, wear layer and adhesive coverage; what stays hard to predict from a spec sheet is how the glue line under that oven behaves once the kitchen has been in daily use for a decade.
