Grout a Wet Room With Mapei Ultracolor Plus in 6 Steps for a Mould-Resistant Joint
Mapei Ultracolor Plus is a CG2 WA cement grout for 2mm to 20mm joints, with BioBlock and DropEffect additives aimed at mould resistance and reduced surface water absorption. The mix ratio, slaking time, wash timing, and silicone junctions decide whether those properties survive the installation.
A wet room joint usually gives trouble in the grout line before the tile itself suffers. Water sits in the recess, the joint remains damp, and the black bloom around the shower base can appear within months. Mapei Ultracolor Plus is designed for exactly that environment: BioBlock resists mould growth inside the joint, and DropEffect reduces water absorption at the surface so the face of the grout sheds moisture more easily.
The grout is classified as CG2 WA under EN 13888, which means reduced water absorption and high abrasion resistance. One powder covers joints from 2mm up to 20mm without slumping, a range wide enough for most porcelain wet-room layouts. The sequence below keeps the cement matrix dense enough for those features to matter.
Mixing sets the cure
The bag calls for roughly 5.5 to 6 litres of clean water for a 23kg unit. Treat that range as part of the specification. Extra water may make the paste feel easier under the float, but it raises the water-to-cement ratio and leaves more capillary pore space after evaporation.
Those pores become the route for water to move back into the joint later. They also weaken the DropEffect surface behaviour that is meant to keep the grout face drier under shower use.
Measure the water precisely with a jug. Put the water into the bucket first, then add the powder. That order helps prevent dry clumps forming at the bottom and sides of the bucket.
Use a paddle mixer on a slow drill setting, around 300 to 400 rpm, and mix for two to three minutes until the paste is smooth and free of lumps. Leave it to slake for around three minutes, then remix briefly. During that rest, the additives wet through properly; a skipped slake is a common cause of patchy colour across a batch.
Keep the batch size small enough for the working time. Pot life sits near 30 minutes at 23C and shortens noticeably in a warm room. A second person bringing materials or rinsing gear is more useful than a larger bucket, because grout dragged past its pot life will no longer compact into the joint properly.
Once the paste starts stiffening in the bucket, adding water again changes the mix. The joint may still look filled, yet the cured face will not have the same density as a fresh batch worked within time.
Clean joints before the bucket comes out
Every joint needs to be clear to full depth, and the tile adhesive underneath must have set. On a wet-room floor laid with a rapid-set adhesive, grouting can happen the same day. With a standard cement adhesive, allow at least 24 hours before any water load goes near it.
Rake out spacers, vacuum the dust, and check for adhesive squeezed up into the gap. Grout sitting over a ridge of adhesive becomes thin at that point and cracks where the section is weakest.
Depth should be reasonably uniform. A joint that is 2mm deep in one place and 6mm in the next cures at different rates, and the same line can show a colour shift. On porous tile, wipe the joints with a damp sponge before grouting so the tile body does not pull water out of the paste immediately. Porcelain rarely needs this step; natural stone almost always does.
Mask the wet-room drain and any chrome trim before mixing. Ultracolor Plus contains pigment that can stain unglazed stone and bare metal if it dries on the surface. Low-tack tape is quicker than trying to scrub pigment from a drain detail after the grout has firmed.
Buckets and sponges
Use one bucket and one sponge for washing, plus a separate bucket of clean water for rinsing. Shared dirty water drags pigment back over the tile face and is the single biggest cause of a cloudy finish.
Pack the grout, then time the wash
Load a hard rubber grout float and hold it at roughly 45 degrees to the tile face. Work diagonally across the joints so the float edge forces paste down into the gap. Following the joint line tends to skim over the opening and can pull material back out.
Make two or three passes from different angles. The aim is a solid fill with no voids. In a wet room, a voided joint can hold standing water below the surface.
Scrape off excess grout with the float held almost vertical, again moving diagonally. A cleaner tile face at this stage gives an easier wash-off and leaves less pigment-laden slurry to dry into haze. Work in a manageable area, around one square metre at a time, so the grout does not skin over before cleaning begins.
On a sloped wet-room floor, begin at the high point and move toward the drain. That keeps your weight away from freshly filled lines and stops your knees compressing paste before it has started to set.
After filling, the first wash usually falls about 15 to 30 minutes later. The joint should be at thumbprint stage: it dents under pressure without smearing. Wring the sponge until it is only lightly damp, then wipe diagonally in long single strokes, rinsing between passes.
Too much water at this point floods the joint, lifts the surface, and washes away the DropEffect-treated skin you are trying to preserve. The first wash shapes the joint and removes the bulk of the slurry.
Wait another 15 to 20 minutes, then make a second lighter pass to clear the fine haze that has returned to the tile face. Two gentle washes leave a better joint than one heavy scrub. Hard scrubbing erodes the surface and exposes more pore structure, the opposite of what a shower floor needs.
When the joints have firmed fully, usually a couple of hours later, buff the remaining film with a dry microfibre cloth. If stubborn haze sets overnight, Mapei sells a grout haze remover, though a correctly washed joint rarely needs it.
Leave the shower alone while the cement cures. Ultracolor Plus is ready for foot traffic in around 3 hours and can take water on the floor at roughly 24 hours. Full cure, including the point where the additives perform as specified, is closer to several days depending on room temperature and ventilation.
Ventilation changes that window in a real room. A poorly extracted wet room that stays humid can leave the joint vulnerable far longer than the 24-hour figure suggests. Product data gives no year-scale answer for BioBlock in a room that never dries between uses, so the finished joint still depends on the room being able to clear moisture.
Use silicone where the room moves
Grout is rigid, and a wet room has moving junctions. Internal corners, the line where wall tile meets floor tile, and the perimeter where tile meets a shower tray or drain assembly should be filled with flexible silicone. Mapei Mapesil AC is colour-matched to the Ultracolor Plus range, which lets a sealed corner read as one continuous line.
If those movement joints are grouted solid, normal expansion and contraction of the substrate cracks the grout. The crack becomes the water path the rest of the installation was trying to close.
Rake any grout out of corners before it sets. Let the grouted field cure, mask both sides of the corner, run a continuous silicone bead, and tool it once with a wetted finger or a profiling tool. Pull the tape while the silicone is still wet for a clean edge.
The working rule is simple: field joints between full tiles take Ultracolor Plus, and joints at a change of plane or material take silicone. Sealed that way, the wet-room surface keeps water moving toward the drain, where the floor fall can do its work.
A colour-matched corner can look like the same joint as the grouted field, even though it is carrying a different movement load. The rigid field grout and the flexible corner sealant do different jobs along a line that has to look continuous.
