Felco Secateurs and the 45-Degree Cut for Clean Rose Stems

The Felco No. 2 has kept its bypass design since 1948, with replacement blades listed as part 2-3 and a 25mm cutting capacity. On rose stems, the 45-degree cut sends water away from the dormant bud and limits the wound face exposed to Botrytis cinerea infection.

A bypass secateur cuts the way scissors do, with one sharpened blade sliding past a flat, anvil-shaped counterblade. The Felco No. 2 weighs 240 grams, and its forged hardened-steel blade is rated for green wood up to 25mm in diameter. For roses, that difference matters, because an anvil-type pruner presses the stem against a flat plate and leaves a bruised edge where fungal spores can lodge. The 45-degree angle comes from the wrist, not from any setting on the tool, and the cut is placed roughly 5mm above an outward-facing bud.

A sloped cut sheds rainwater off the lower edge instead of leaving it to sit on a flat top. When the wound is clean, the cambium beneath the bud begins forming callus within days. A torn margin from a dull blade delays that closure, because the bark has been ripped before the stem has even begun to seal.

Blade position decides which side gets bruised

Hold the secateurs with the cutting blade nearest the section of stem that will stay on the plant, while the counterblade faces the offcut. Reverse that orientation and the retained stem carries the crush mark instead. On a hybrid tea rose, this single handling error sits among the common causes of dieback below the cut, where the tissue browns and recedes back toward the next sound node over the weeks that follow.

The 45-degree slope runs down and away from the bud. Water should drain toward the rear of the stem rather than across the swelling bud eye. A cut made too high, 15mm or more above the bud, leaves a stub that dries out and dies back to the node anyway. A cut made too close, under 3mm, can dry the bud itself. The 5mm spacing is the working compromise that horticulturists at the Royal Horticultural Society have published in pruning guidance for decades.

The Felco 2-3 replacement blade fits the No. 2 body, and its bevel is maintained at roughly 23 degrees with the Felco 903 sharpening tool. Once the edge has gone, the blade compresses the stem before it slices through it. That compression is the damage that opens the way for infection, even when the angle above the bud looks correct.

Sterilising between rose bushes

Wipe the blade with surgical spirit or a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol solution between bushes when one shows rose dieback or canker. A single contaminated cut can carry Diaporthe rudis spores down a row of plants, and two seconds of wiping is the whole procedure.

Dormancy, frost and the shape of the bush

The cut is made when the rose is dormant or just breaking, usually from late winter into early spring in temperate zones, before the sap rises fully. A stem cut during active growth bleeds, and the wound stays wet for longer. In the southern hemisphere the dormant window falls in the opposite calendar months. Gardeners in frost-prone districts wait until the last hard frost has passed, because a fresh cut above a swelling bud is vulnerable to frost damage that kills the exposed tissue.

Work through one bush in sequence. Dead, diseased and damaged wood comes out first, cut back to live white pith. Crossing stems that rub each other are removed next, since the abrasion wound is another entry point for canker. The remaining stems are shortened into an open goblet shape, which lets air move through the centre of the plant and dry the foliage faster after rain. Black spot, caused by Diplocarpon rosae, establishes on leaves that stay wet, so structural pruning doubles as disease control through airflow.

A mature hybrid tea is typically reduced to between three and five strong stems. Each is cut to an outward-facing bud at a height of 20 to 30cm from the graft union. Shrub roses and ramblers follow different rules, with ramblers pruned after flowering because they bloom on the previous season’s wood.

Ilex crenata needs the same clean severance

Ilex crenata, the Japanese holly widely used as a box substitute after Buxus succumbed to Cylindrocladium buxicola blight, is clipped more than it is pruned stem by stem. For most of that work, Felco secateurs give way to shears or a battery hedge trimmer. The secateurs return for any stem thicker than 6mm that the shears would crush.

Topiary clipping on Ilex crenata is done two to three times in a growing season, with the first cut after the spring flush has hardened. The plant responds by branching more densely near the cut surface, and that is the response that builds a solid topiary skin over three to four years. A crushed stem at the surface browns and leaves a visible dead patch in the green form, so the bypass blade still matters on a plant shaped mostly by machine.

Feeding supports that regrowth. A balanced slow-release fertiliser applied in spring sustains repeated cutting, because every clip removes photosynthetic tissue the plant has to rebuild. Ilex crenata tolerates this treatment far better than the holly forms grown for berries, since clipped specimens are male or non-fruiting cultivars selected for dense foliage and tight internodes.

What a poor cut costs the plant

In a row of twelve floribunda roses pruned in one afternoon, a dull blade combined with no sterilising after a cankered bush can plausibly leave dieback on four or five plants over the next month. Each affected stem then has to be recut lower in the following season, taking away 50 to 80mm of otherwise healthy wood. That loss can delay the bush’s recovery to full flowering by a season.

The Felco 903 sharpener costs a fraction of replacing one mature rose, and the 2-3 replacement blade restores a worn No. 2 to factory cutting performance. A blade honed before the pruning session and wiped with alcohol between suspect plants removes the two obvious failure modes at once.

The 45-degree angle contributes less than sharpness and blade orientation do. A flat cut made with a clean, sharp blade above a sound bud will heal. The sloped cut improves the margin by shedding water and reducing standing moisture on the wound face, which matters more in a wet maritime climate than in a dry continental garden. The angle also has the practical merit of being easy to teach and easy to check by eye, which goes some way to explaining why the convention has held so firmly in handbooks.

Where rose and holly part company

With a rose, you cut above one chosen bud and steer next season’s growth outward from that single point. The holly works on the opposite principle: clip across its whole surface and the growth fragments into hundreds of cut tips, thickening into a dense skin. A rose bush might take fifteen deliberate secateur cuts across a season, whereas an Ilex crenata cone absorbs thousands of shear cuts in the same months. That is a gap of two orders of magnitude in cut count.

Neatness pulls in two directions across these plants: an opened framework on the rose, a packed evergreen wall on the holly. What carries over from one to the other is the look of the wound. Pale, clean tissue tells you the blade was sharp and seated right; brown, bruised margins tell you something dragged or pressed instead of slicing. The Japanese holly hides those marks under new growth far quicker than a rose ever will, which is partly why a slack hand on the shears goes unnoticed for longer than a botched rose cut does.
