Build a Window Seat With IKEA BESTA Frames in 8 Steps for 30% More Storage
A standard BESTA frame is 60 cm wide, 42 cm deep and 38 cm high. Set two under a 1.2 m window bay and the bench encloses roughly 0.18 cubic metres of storage. BESTA hacks have appeared on home-renovation forums since 2019, mostly because dead window-wall space can become seating and storage in the same build.
The 38 cm frame height sets the seat
A BESTA frame is 38 cm high before feet, plinths or a top are added. Add a 2 cm plywood lid and a 5 cm cushion and the finished surface comes out at about 45 cm, close to the seat height of many dining chairs and inside the 40 to 48 cm adult comfort range often used for chair seats. That height is what makes the BESTA carcass useful under a window. A kitchen cabinet carcass, commonly 70 to 90 cm tall, would push the cushion far too high for a bench.
Start with the reveal, since the frames only work neatly when the wall opening is checked before ordering. A 1.2 m bay takes two 60 cm frames with a small reveal gap at the ends. Scribed timber fillets painted to match the wall or frame hide those gaps. A 1.8 m bay takes three frames. The units bolt together through the pre-drilled BESTA holes with the connecting hardware from the range, so the row acts as one rigid carcass once joined.
Deep reveals and old skirting boards often force the row forward. Pulling the frames 5 to 8 cm off the back wall clears the skirting projection, and the remaining gap can be boxed with a removable batten so cables, pipes or blind parts remain reachable.
Eight build steps
- Measure the reveal width, the reveal depth and the skirting projection. Keep those figures with the order list.
- Assemble each BESTA frame flat on the floor using the printed instructions. Leave the back panel loose if a cellular blind cable or radiator pipe needs to pass behind the unit.
- Bolt the frames together side by side through the factory holes.
- Fix the joined row to the wall with two fixings per frame into masonry, or into studs found with a detector when the wall is plasterboard.
- Cut an 18 mm plywood lid after the carcass has been fixed in place. Size it with a 20 mm overhang at the front, and scribe the back edge to the wall. Older walls can run out by 10 mm or more across a 1.8 m bay, so a lid cut before the carcass is fixed will often show a wedge-shaped gap.
- Attach the lid with concealed soft-close lid stays if the top will lift. A permanently screwed-down lid also works when storage is loaded through front BESTA doors. With a lifting lid you reach the whole cavity, though the hinges take wear every day they are used. A fixed lid keeps that strain out of the build, but anything that slides to the back becomes awkward to retrieve.
- Edge-band the plywood or paint it, then seal the surface.
- Add the cushion once the paint or sealant has cured enough for normal handling.
A single sheet spanning all frames reads visually as one bench, which is why the lid is worth cutting as one piece where the room allows it. Separate tops make the storage easier to open in sections, though the joins are visible from the doorway and catch crumbs along the front edge.
Fixings, loads and the front edge
A window seat shares some fixing logic with a floating shelf, even though the forces are easier to manage. Heavy-duty expanding wall plugs for solid masonry are commonly rated at 40 to 60 kg per fixing in pull-out, with the exact value depending on the plug, wall material and manufacturer test data. A seated adult loads the BESTA row mainly downward through the frame base into the floor, with some shear at the wall. The wall fixings are therefore doing less work than they would on a cantilevered shelf carrying the same weight away from the wall.
Shelf brackets get into trouble through leverage: weight at the front tries to pull the fixing out of the wall. On a BESTA bench, the more likely problems are a loose lid tipping when someone sits on its front edge, or separate frames racking sideways because they were never bolted together. The connected carcass and two wall fixings per frame deal with those weak points.
Plasterboard needs a wider spread. A row fixed to only one stud can pivot, especially when pressure lands near the front corner. Locate at least two studs per row. Where the stud positions do not line up with the frames, an 18 mm plywood batten screwed into several studs spreads the load before the BESTA row is fixed to it.
Stored weight behaves differently from shelf weight. A cavity filled with 25 kg of folded blankets sends that mass down through the frame base into the floor. Fixings that would be marginal for a loaded floating shelf can still be ample for a floor-supported seat.
Seal the lid before the cushion goes on
Untreated plywood takes in moisture from winter condensation on cold glass. Two coats of water-based polyurethane varnish, sanded between coats with 240 grit, leave a wipeable surface and reduce staining where the cushion touches the timber.
Heat, blinds and the blocked radiator problem
A window seat sits in the coldest strip of the room. Single glazing and older double glazing lose heat, and a bench tight to the reveal interrupts the warm-air path that would otherwise rise past the glass.
Cellular blinds belong in the build plan because they change the space behind and above the bench. Honeycomb fabric traps still air inside its cells, and the improvement at the opening depends on cell depth, side tracks and how tightly the blind seals to the reveal.
The seat can foul the blind if the frames sit proud of the wall. Leaving the back panel of each BESTA frame removable gives a blind cord cleat or motorised cable a path behind the unit. This small access choice matters most in deep reveals, where the bench face may be several centimetres forward of the original wall line.
Radiators under windows create a separate design constraint. A bench built over one can trap convected heat inside the storage cavity, which warms the contents while the room stays cooler. A 30 mm slot grille cut into the plywood lid above the radiator lets warm air escape into the room. When that grille is skipped, the cushion can feel warm while the space around the seat does not benefit from the heat source.
Floor edge
Engineered oak parquet fitting needs care at the bench front because the cut line is visible from the doorway. On a floating underlay, engineered oak parquet needs an 8 to 10 mm expansion gap at every fixed edge, including the face of a window seat bolted to the wall. Boards butted tight to the bench can cup or lift when humidity rises in summer, since the floating floor has no room to move. Leave the gap and cover it with a slim scribed bead pinned to the bench, leaving the floor free.
A 1.8 m bay worked through
Three 60 cm BESTA frames fill a 1.8 m bay, giving an internal storage volume of roughly 0.27 cubic metres. That is enough for folded winter throws with a stack of board games beside them. The lid comes off a single 1.83 m by 0.6 m offcut of 18 mm plywood, and two masonry fixings per frame brings the total to six fixings into the reveal wall. A radiator under the window needs the 30 mm slot grille placed above it, and where engineered oak parquet runs up to the bench, the 8 mm expansion gap has to be held along the front edge.
The one figure that tends to surprise people is the cushion. A 1.8 m bench cushion in mid-weight upholstery foam can cost more than all three frames combined, which is worth pricing before the build commits to a bay this wide.
