9-Step Plan to Insulate Sash Windows With Stormguard Brush Seals for 20% Less Draught

Stormguard sells its brush-pile carrier strip in 5m and 10m rolls, and the manufacturer claims a draught reduction around 20% on a typical sliding sash. The number depends almost entirely on whether you seal the meeting rail, which most fitting guides skip. Below is the routing, the gap measurement, and the two joints that account for most of the leakage.

Measure the gap before buying anything. A sliding sash leaks at four places: the two stiles where the sash runs against the parting bead, the bottom rail against the cill, the top rail against the head, and the meeting rail where the two sashes overlap. The gaps are rarely uniform. Stormguard brush carrier comes in pile heights of roughly 4.8mm, 6.8mm and longer, and fitting a 6.8mm pile into a 3mm gap will jam the sash. A feeler gauge or a folded strip of paper pushed into the gap at five points along each edge tells you which pile height the run needs. Older Victorian boxes drift out of square, so the bottom rail gap on the left can differ from the right by 2mm or more.

Why the meeting rail is the joint that decides the 20%

The meeting rail is the horizontal joint roughly halfway up the window, where the bottom of the upper sash meets the top of the lower sash. On most original timber sashes these two faces never touched cleanly, and the gap there runs the full width of the opening. It is the single longest unsealed path in the whole assembly, and it sits at the height where warm air inside meets cold air in the cavity, so it moves a lot of air by convection alone.

Most online fitting walkthroughs cover the stiles and the cill and stop. That is where the manufacturer’s headline figure quietly erodes. Stormguard’s own draught-strip range includes a self-adhesive blade seal, the V-strip type, specifically because a brush carrier is awkward to route along the meeting rail without removing the lower sash. If you seal the two stiles and the cill but leave the meeting rail open, you have closed maybe three of the four leak paths and the real-world reduction lands well below the advertised 20%.

The practical fix is a thin nylon-pile or silicone blade fitted to the underside of the upper sash’s bottom rail, so it bears on the top face of the lower sash when both are shut. You need the sashes parted to reach it cleanly, which is step six below.

Steps 1 to 3: lift the staff bead, free the lower sash, read the runners

The staff bead is the innermost timber strip holding the lower sash in its channel. It is usually pinned, not screwed, so a stiff filling knife or a bolster eased behind it at the centre of the run pops the pins without splitting the timber. Work from the middle outward; levering at the mitred corners first is how you crack the bead. Keep the four lengths, they are cut to the box and replacements never sit right.

With the staff bead off, the lower sash tilts inward and lifts out. The sash cords are still attached at this point. Tie each cord off to its own weight pocket or clamp it with a spring clamp so the cast-iron weight, often 4 to 6kg per side, does not drop into the box and vanish. Cut nothing yet.

Now look at the runner faces. Decades of paint build up on the stile channels, and that paint is half the reason the sash binds. A scraper and a sanding block taking the channel back to bare or near-bare timber lets the brush carrier sit flat against a true surface. If you fit the brush over lumpy paint, the pile bridges the high spots and leaves gaps under the low ones.

Steps 4 and 5: route the parting bead and set the stile brushes

The parting bead is the slim central strip that separates the upper and lower sashes in the box. It lifts out by hand once the lower sash is removed, since it sits in a loose groove. Replacing a worn parting bead with a brush-pile parting bead is the cleanest route for the stiles, because the brush is built into the bead and there is no separate strip to align.

If you keep the original parting bead, you fit the Stormguard carrier into the stile channel instead. The carrier has a barbed fin that presses into a pre-cut groove, or a self-adhesive backing on the surface-mount versions. Surface mount is faster but the adhesive lets go in a few winters on bare timber; the grooved type, cut with a 3mm to 4mm router bit or a fine tenon saw, holds for the life of the window. Run the brush the full height of the channel and cut it about 5mm short at each end so it does not foul the rail seals.

The pile should compress to roughly half its free height when the sash is back in. If it compresses fully and the sash drags, you have over-specced the pile and the window will be stiff for a season before the nylon beds in.

Step 6: the meeting rail blade, fitted with the upper sash dropped

Free the upper sash the same way you freed the lower one, by removing the parting bead so it slides forward. Drop it a few inches to expose the underside of its bottom rail. Clean that face, then run the blade or thin brush along it, ending flush with the stiles. When both sashes are reseated and closed, the blade bears on the lifted lower rail and closes the gap you measured earlier.

Steps 7 to 9: cill, head, reseat, and the test that actually counts

The bottom rail of the lower sash meets the cill, and the top rail of the upper sash meets the head. Both take a straight run of brush carrier fixed to the rail itself, not the frame, so the seal moves with the sash and clears the channel when you slide it open. Cut these to the exact internal width and tuck the ends behind the stile seals so air cannot turn the corner.

Reseat the parting beads first, then the sashes, then the staff bead. Tap the staff bead pins home with a fine nail set so the heads sink below the surface. The sashes should slide with steady hand pressure and stop without slamming. If a sash now rises on its own or drops under its weight, the cord tension is off, not the seals, and that is a balance job inside the weight pocket.

The honest test is a lit incense stick or a thin tissue held at the meeting rail and the cill on a windy day. Before sealing, the smoke streams sideways at the meeting rail. After, it should barely lean. That visible difference at the meeting rail is the part of the 20% the stile seals alone never deliver.

For scale, a single Georgian sash in a draughty room can move enough air through its gaps to account for a noticeable share of that room’s heat loss in winter, and the meeting rail and cill carry most of it. The stiles feel draughty to the hand because the air moves fast through a narrow slot, but the slow bleed across the wide meeting rail moves more total volume.

A worked example on a standard two-over-two box

Take a sash opening 900mm wide by 1500mm tall. The two stiles need about 1500mm of brush each, so 3000mm. The cill and head rails take 900mm each, 1800mm total. The meeting rail blade takes another 900mm. That is 5700mm of sealing, comfortably inside one 10m Stormguard roll with offcuts to spare. Buying the 5m roll leaves you 700mm short the moment you account for the trim losses at every corner, which is the most common reason a job stalls halfway.

The weights matter too. A 900 by 1500 lower sash with single glazing carries cords sized for perhaps 9 to 12kg of glass and timber, balanced by matching weights. Adding brush pile adds friction, not mass, so the existing weights stay correct. If you reglaze to slim double units in the same operation, the sash gets heavier and the old weights no longer balance it, which is a separate problem the brush seals cannot fix.

What the method above does not address is the box itself. Cold air enters the weight cavity through gaps in the lining and the pocket cover, then leaks into the room behind the architrave, well away from any seal you have fitted to the moving sash. Whether sealing that hidden cavity is worth opening the box for is a question the brush-pile approach leaves entirely open.
