9 Step Garlic Planting Routine with Solent Wight Bulbs in October
Solent Wight bulbs break into about eight to twelve cloves, and the 15 cm spacing matters once rust weather arrives in May. This October routine covers graded stock, planting depth, Bocking 14 comfrey feed, Niwaki GR Pro secateurs, curing, and the storage choice at the end.
Order Solent Wight from the Isle of Wight Garlic Farm before late September to secure graded planting stock. Leave the purchase until October and the bulbs still available are often kitchen-grade. Each bulb breaks into eight to twelve cloves, and only the fat outer cloves go into the bed. The thin central cloves are better kept for cooking, because a 4-gram clove produces a noticeably smaller bulb than a 9-gram clove by July. Solent Wight is a softneck variety, so it stores into late winter and rarely throws a flower scape, which makes its routine different from hardneck types such as Lautrec Wight.
Why October suits Solent Wight
Garlic needs several weeks below roughly 10C to trigger bulb division, the process known as vernalisation. An October planting gets that cold spell during a British winter, and the cloves still have time to put down roots before the soil chills hard. By the time hard frost arrives, they are anchored and feeding. Spring-planted Solent Wight usually misses that natural cold trigger and almost always produces a single undivided round instead of a segmented bulb.
Autumn planting also gives the crop a head start underground. Cloves planted in mid-October often have six to eight weeks of root growth before the first growth flush in February, so the plant can draw on a fuller root system when nitrogen demand rises. Growers on heavy clay sometimes delay until early November to avoid waterlogging, while free-draining loam across much of England and Wales makes the third week of October the dependable target.
Steps one to three: bed, spacing, depth
Clear the bed properly before any clove goes in. Couch grass and bindweed roots are worth removing by hand, because garlic dislikes competition and its shallow planting depth lets weeds get away quickly. Fork in a bucket of well-rotted compost per square metre, then rake the surface to a fine tilth. Fresh manure drives leafy top growth at the expense of bulb size and can encourage rot during a wet winter.
Set cloves 15 cm apart in rows 30 cm apart. That spacing gives each plant enough room to size up and keeps the foliage from closing into a humid canopy, the kind of still air that favours rust later in the season. Push each clove in with the pointed end up and the flat basal plate down. The tip should sit 2 to 3 cm below the surface.
On exposed sites, plant a little deeper, down to 5 cm, so frost heave does not lift the cloves out during winter. A short dibber, or even a thick pencil, marks the holes faster than opening a trench and helps keep the row spacing honest.
Firm the soil back lightly after planting. Birds, especially jackdaws, will pull at freshly planted cloves if any tip shows above the surface. Netting or fleece over the bed for the first fortnight prevents the dull job of replanting lifted cloves.
Step four: comfrey feed in spring
Use comfrey feed once growth is moving in spring. Bocking 14 comfrey, the sterile Russian cultivar that will not seed itself across the plot, is the type many allotment growers keep for this purpose. Cut the leaves, pack them into a bucket, add a weighted lid, and after four to six weeks the bucket will hold a dark concentrate. Dilute it at roughly one part concentrate to fifteen parts water.
Garlic gets its first comfrey drench in late February or early March, when the green shoots are 10 to 15 cm tall and the plant is entering rapid leaf growth. Comfrey is high in potassium, which the bulb needs as swelling begins from April onward. Apply it every two to three weeks until early June, then stop. Feeding in the final weeks before harvest keeps the plant green at the stage when it should be drying down, which pushes lifting later.
A maturing comfrey butt smells famously foul, so the lidded bucket belongs at the far end of the plot. A 200-litre water butt of dilute feed is enough for a 10-metre row through the whole spring run, with plenty left for the leeks and onions growing alongside.
Step five: mulch choice
Lay a 3 cm mulch of leaf mould or straw after the cloves have rooted, which suppresses weeds and steadies soil temperature through freeze-thaw cycles that lift shallow cloves. Grass clippings are a poor choice here, as they mat into a wet, airless layer that rots the necks.
Steps six to eight: rust, water, weeds and rot
From May onward, rust becomes the disease most likely to spoil British garlic foliage. The orange pustules are Puccinia allii, and they spread fastest in still, humid air. That is why the 15 cm spacing matters months after planting: the row needs airflow once the leaves have filled out.
There is no spray that clears an established infection on an edible crop. The practical defence is spacing, airflow, and removing the worst-affected lower leaves. A run of Solent Wight planted too close together in a sheltered corner will rust out weeks ahead of a generously spaced row in open ground.
Water is usually supplied by a normal British spring, but a dry April changes the job. Bulb sizing stalls without moisture during the swelling phase, so a deep soak once a week in drought is better than a daily splash. Stop watering entirely in the final three weeks before lifting, giving the skins time to cure and the necks time to firm.
Weeding stays close, slow work. A hoe run too close slices into the shallow bulbs, and garlic resents root disturbance more than most alliums. Hand weeding is safer around the row, especially once the bulbs begin to swell.
Niwaki GR Pro secateurs are useful for the precise cuts needed when trimming rust-spotted foliage or tidying the bed edge. Their narrow blade gets between crowded stems without crushing neighbouring plants. The same pair earns its keep elsewhere on the plot, from pinching sweet peas to keep them bushy to cutting comfrey leaves for the feed butt.
White rot, Sclerotium cepivorum, shows as yellowing leaves and a fluffy white fungus at the base. There is no cure, the soil-borne sclerotia survive for years, and affected plants should be lifted and bagged for household waste. Keep that material out of the compost heap.
Step nine: lifting and curing
Solent Wight is usually lifted in late June or July in southern England, with harvest a few weeks later further north. Read the leaves carefully: when the lower third to half have yellowed and bent over, the bulb has reached full size. If lifting is delayed too long, the wrapper skins split, exposing the cloves and shortening storage life.
Ease bulbs out with a fork from a hand’s width away. Pulling by the stem tears the neck and lets rot in. Brush off loose soil, leave the hose aside, and keep the plant whole for curing.
Lay the plants somewhere airy and out of direct sun for two to three weeks. Once the necks are dry and papery, the bulbs are ready to plait or string. The cultivar holds in a cool dry shed into the new year, though softnecks soften and sprout earlier than hardnecks once spring warmth returns.
Keeping back the largest bulbs saves money, while buying fresh certified stock keeps the eating crop and seed crop separate. The unresolved choice is whether that separation is worth paying for again.
