9 Step Brick Raised Bed Build with Marshalls Pavers Over a 4-Metre Run
A 4-metre brick raised bed can be costed at roughly 280 bricks for a three-course wall, with a footing trench dug to 150mm. This nine-step build runs from a pegged string line to Marshalls coping, copper tape, backfill and strawberry planting.
Set out the 4-metre run before ordering materials. A bricklayer’s line pulled between two pegs at 4000mm marks the outer face of the long wall. For a bed 1 metre deep, each short return runs 1000mm, putting the total wall length at 10 metres. A standard UK brick is 215mm long, and a 10mm perpend joint brings each brick unit to 225mm. One course around the perimeter therefore takes about 44 bricks. A three-course wall, which is the usual height for a raised bed sitting around 215mm proud of the surrounding soil, comes to roughly 132 bricks before corner cuts and breakage. Add 10 percent and the order comes in near 150.
In this build, Marshalls pavers serve as the coping and the surrounding patio surface; the wall itself uses facing bricks. Keep the two orders separate on the delivery note so heavy paving slabs are not stacked on the brickwork.
Steps 1 to 3: trench, footing, first course
Dig the footing trench to 150mm deep and 300mm wide around the full 10-metre perimeter. That width gives a 215mm wall a generous bearing on both sides. A trench measuring 150mm by 300mm over 10 metres takes 0.45 cubic metres of concrete, so batching about 0.5 cubic metres in a 1 part cement to 5 parts ballast mix leaves a little waste.
Tamp the wet concrete level with a board and leave it for 48 hours. Bricklayers who lay onto green concrete find that the footing flexes under the weight of the first three courses, and the bed joints crack within a season. Once the footing has cured, lay the first course in 1:4 cement to building sand mortar. Butter every perpend to a full 10mm. Along the 4-metre face, check level every fourth brick with a 1200mm spirit level. A short boat level misses drift that becomes obvious over a long run.
Stretcher bond is the simplest pattern for a single-skin retaining wall. At each corner, a half-bat or queen closer keeps the bond true where the long wall meets the 1-metre returns.
Steps 4 to 6: upper courses, drainage, backfill
Lay courses two and three in the same mortar, shifting the perpends by half a brick from the course below. The half-brick stagger stops a vertical joint running through more than one course. That offset matters on a raised bed 1 metre deep, because saturated compost pushes hard against the inner face.
Leave drainage points at the base. Every fourth perpend on the lowest course can be left unmortared so water escapes instead of sitting behind the brick and freezing. Four weep holes along the 4-metre face, plus one on each return, give six outlets. When water remains trapped behind a saturated wall, a hard frost can spall brick faces over two or three winters.
Start the internal fill with 100mm of 20mm clean gravel placed against the inside base of the wall. Lay geotextile over that gravel before the growing medium goes in, keeping the fabric against the drainage layer so fine compost cannot wash down and block the weep holes. For the growing medium, use two parts topsoil to one part well-rotted compost. A 4 metre by 1 metre by 0.6 metre void takes about 2.4 cubic metres of material, which is the quantity many people underestimate by half.
Steps 7 to 9: Marshalls coping, copper tape, planting out
The Marshalls pavers earn their place at the top of the wall. A flat paver bedded across the 215mm wall, with 25mm overhang on each face, throws rainwater clear of the brickwork and gives the bed a sitting edge. Bed each paver on 1:4 mortar, butter the joints, and give the coping a slight fall toward the outer face so water sheds away from the soil side.
Run copper tape around the outer coping edge as a slug barrier. The tape works on a small galvanic charge that slugs and snails avoid crossing. A 50mm band laid flat along the 10-metre coping perimeter needs a single 10-metre roll with no join, because even a 10mm gap gives them a crossing point. Strawberries in raised beds lose more fruit to slug grazing than to any disease, and the copper line at the coping catches the climbers before they reach the crowns.
Wait until the medium has settled before planting. A fortnight is enough for the surface to drop 30 to 50mm. Top up to within 50mm of the coping before the plants go in so the roots sit under the finished soil line.
A note on the cap
The coping is the course in daily view for the next twenty years. Lay it slowly.
Where strawberries change the maths
A flat 4 metre by 1 metre raised bed gives 4 square metres of planting surface. Strawberries spaced at 350mm, in rows 400mm apart, give around 28 plants in that footprint. That is a decent crop from a low bed, but the same wall footprint can also carry a vertical strawberry tower fixed to the inner face, and that changes the planting density.
A vertical tower made from stacked planters, four tiers at 300mm diameter, holds roughly 20 plants in the floor space of one planter. Bolt the tower bracket to the inner brick with frame fixings drilled into the brick body; a fixing set in a perpend joint pulls out under the swinging weight of a watered tower. Use a 7mm masonry bit, plug the hole, and drive a 60mm screw into solid brick.
A tower drains from top to bottom, so the upper tier dries first and needs checking against the lower tiers every day in July. A flat bed with the same 28 plants holds moisture much longer, because the 2.4 cubic metres of growing medium below the crop acts as a reservoir. The tower gains plants per square metre and gives up days between waterings.
Copper tape helps the tower as well. Wrap it once around the base post below the lowest tier. Slugs can climb the post to reach fruit that the ground-level barrier never intercepts, and a single 50mm band at ankle height closes that route.
Starting the plants under cover
A heated propagator brings strawberry runners and companion seed into growth four to six weeks ahead of an unheated windowsill. Most bench propagators hold soil temperature at 18 to 22 degrees Celsius, the range where strawberry and most vegetable seed germinate within seven to fourteen days instead of sitting cold and rotting. Sow into 9cm pots of seed compost, keep the propagator vents covered until the first true leaves show, then crack the vents so the seedlings harden against the lower temperature of the bed they will move into.
A raised bed laid in March cures and settles through April, which is precisely when propagator-started plants reach planting size. Sow too early and the seedlings outgrow the propagator before the mortar has cured and the medium has stopped sinking.
The unanswered measure in a strawberry bed remains plain enough: how much fruit the vertical crop gives back for the extra watering it demands.
