A Conference pear on Quince A rootstock pushes upright growth unless its arms are cut and tied at the right buds. The Felco 2, with 25mm capacity, is enough for a young espalier across four tiers. The key timings are a winter leader cut, late-summer Lorette pinching, and regular spur thinning.

Quince A gives a Conference pear enough vigour for a proper wall-trained frame. It is semi-vigorous, so the scion can make roughly 2.5 to 3 metres of spread across four tiers, with enough annual extension to fill horizontal wires and more drive than the stunted reluctance often seen on Quince C. The Felco 2 earns its place for a plain reason: its 25mm cutting capacity covers every cut on a young espalier, and its bypass blade leaves a clean wound that calluses faster than the crushed scar left by an anvil pruner. On many garden walls, failed espaliers trace back to cuts made at the wrong bud or season, while the rootstock takes the blame.

The first cut waits for winter

Start with a maiden whip or a one-year feathered tree planted 20cm clear of the wall. Keep the graft union a good 10cm above soil level so the Conference scion never roots through and overrides the Quince A. The first cut is severe: take the leader down to about 40cm, just above three good buds, during dormancy between December and February while the sap is down.

The top bud becomes the new vertical leader. The two buds below it, ideally facing left and right instead of pointing toward or away from the wall, form tier one. If the buds sit front-to-back, rotate the tree in the planting hole before backfilling.

At this thickness the Felco 2 should pass through a maiden stem cleanly in one cut. Hold the blade uppermost and angle the cut slightly away from the bud so water runs off the wound. A flat horizontal chop across the stem encourages dieback into the bud that was meant to carry the framework.

Late-summer cuts build the spur system

In late July or early August, once the current season’s shoots have firmed at the base and turned woody for the first 20cm or so, shorten every side shoot growing off the main framework back to three leaves above the basal cluster. This is the Modified Lorette system, the technique that lets espaliered pears crop heavily on a small amount of wood.

The three-leaf pinch stops extension growth and pushes the base of the shoot toward fruit-bud formation. Cut while the shoot is still soft and green, and secondary growth bursts from the wound, giving more pruning work and no fruit. Cut into autumn, and the buds have already set their pattern.

The basal third of the shoot changes from grass-green to a dull brown-green as it matures, and that colour shift is the cue to make the cut. The window shifts north to south across a country by two or three weeks, so the wood is a better guide than the calendar.

Any secondary shoots that break from those pinched stubs are cut back again to one leaf in September. Pear sap is gummy at this stage, and the Felco 2 sap groove on the lower handle channels it away from the pivot bolt. On Conference, a wet-wooded pear, cheaper secateurs can glue themselves stiff after an afternoon of repeated cuts.

Leave the vertical leader through summer. Its job is to extend until the dormant-season cut sets the height for the next tier.

Long, soft summer growth left unpinched turns the wall into upright wood, and early pinching simply restarts the same problem from a different point on the shoot. The result hangs entirely on repeating small cuts at the right stage of maturity.

Tying fixes the tier angle

Set the horizontal arms with tying. Bamboo canes lashed to the support wires at a true 90 degrees, with the young pliable extension shoot tied along the cane in soft twine, make a cleaner tier than cuts used to force the angle.

Bend a shoot below horizontal and it slows down and fruits. Hold one above horizontal and it runs straight back into wood. The arm’s angle is what tips the tree toward growth or toward crop.

The winter leader cut makes the next tier

Each dormant season, cut the vertical leader down to leave about 45cm of new wood above the tier set the previous year. Finish just above three well-placed buds. That pace gives one new tier per year, so a four-tier espalier on Quince A takes four years to complete structurally, followed by permanent maintenance.

The horizontal arms also need a winter cut. Take the leading extension of each arm back by roughly a third of the season’s growth, cutting to an underside or side bud. Avoid a top bud, because it sends the arm upward and creates extra summer correction.

By tier three, the arms should be reaching their target length, often 1.2 to 1.5 metres each side on Quince A. Once they reach that span, cut the extension back to a weak bud every winter so the arm holds its place on the wire.

A wall-trained Conference also needs a pollination partner within insect range. It is partially self-fertile, but cropping doubles with a Williams or a Concorde in the same garden. Both sit in the same flowering group and overlap reliably with Conference.

Spur thinning keeps Conference cropping annually

By year five or six, the fruiting spurs built by Lorette pinching begin to crowd. A Conference spur system left alone turns into a tight knot of buds, with small fruit and a dying centre inside the cluster. Every few winters, cut out the oldest and most congested spur clusters entirely, then shorten others to two or three fruit buds.

Removing flower buds also removes potential pears, so the biological reason matters. If every spur is retained, Conference can give one heavy crop of undersized fruit and then swing toward biennial bearing. Thinned spurs hold the tree closer to a steady annual crop of decent-sized fruit.

The Felco 2 handles spur wood up to its 25mm limit. Old spur systems on a mature tree sometimes exceed that size, and forcing secateurs through oversized wood can spring the blade out of true. Use a small pruning saw for any cut that makes the handles strain.

Spring disbudding reduces later pruning. Rub out any bud breaking on the front face of an arm, pointing straight toward the viewer or back into the wall, while it is still soft. A bud removed with a thumbnail in April saves a steel cut later.

Blade angle matters on young framework

Set the Felco 2 so the blade travels in the same line as the bud beneath it. The finished cut should slope away from that bud, shedding rain from the wound. That habit prevents much of the dieback that ruins young framework wood, and it matters most on the leader cuts that decide each future tier.

What Quince A demands over time

Quince A gives reach and resilience, and it brings continuing vigour management. A Conference on Quince A planted in good soil will keep trying to outgrow its frame for fifteen or twenty years, so the summer pinch and the winter leader cut remain part of the annual routine. Gardeners who choose the more dwarfing Quince C in the hope of reducing work often find that the tree sulks against a hot south wall, struggles in poor ground, and fails to build the spur system that makes an espalier worthwhile.

On Quince A, four tiers at 40cm spacing give a finished tree about 1.8 metres tall with arms spanning 3 metres. Once mature, it can carry 15 to 20kg of pears in a good year from a single wall. That crop depends on spur thinning over decades. After three missed winters of spur work, the same tree can fall into a biennial scatter of small fruit, and feeding alone will not restore it without a hard renovation prune that costs two seasons of cropping.

The framework on a mature tree is the easy part to keep right, because it stops moving once the tiers are set. The harder judgement, every winter, is which vigorous new shoots to let live on a wall already packed with productive pear wood and which to cut out before they shade their neighbours into barren spurs.
