7 Step Fig Brown Turkey Fan Training Against a South-Facing Fence Panel
A Brown Turkey fig trained as a fan against a 1.8 metre south-facing fence panel can hold eight to ten radiating arms inside three seasons. The work splits into seven steps: anchoring horizontal wires, selecting the framework, tying in with soft jute, and managing root restriction so the wood ripens before the first frost.
Run the support wires before the plant goes anywhere near the panel. On a standard 1.8 metre larch-lap or featherboard fence, fix galvanised vine eyes at 30 centimetre vertical spacing, threading 2.5 millimetre rust-resistant wire through each and tensioning with a Gripple or a straining bolt. Brown Turkey throws vigorous shoots, and slack wire sags under a fan carrying ten arms of fruiting wood by year three. Keep the lowest wire roughly 40 centimetres off the soil so the first pair of arms clears any splashback and the base stays ventilated.
The south aspect is the whole point. Figs ripen on accumulated heat, and a sun-facing timber panel re-radiates warmth through the evening, pushing the fruit toward the soft, splitting-skin stage that signals readiness. A north or east panel will grow the plant but rarely ripens a reliable second crop in a British or northern-European summer.
Step 1: Restrict the roots before you plant
Unrestricted fig roots produce a leafy plant that fruits poorly. The standard fix is a planting pit lined on all four sides with paving slabs or a buried builder’s bucket with the base knocked out, giving a root run of roughly 60 by 60 by 45 centimetres. This checks vegetative drive and pushes the plant toward forming embryo figs at the shoot tips, which is where next year’s crop overwinters.
Backfill with a low-nitrogen mix: two parts loam-based John Innes No 2 to one part coarse grit, with a handful of bonemeal worked into the base. Skip the manure. A fig sitting in rich, moisture-retentive soil runs to foliage and the wood fails to ripen, which leaves the embryo figs vulnerable when temperatures drop below minus 2 Celsius. The slab-lined pit also improves drainage at the crown, which matters on heavy clay where winter waterlogging rots the root collar.
Step 2: Pick a maiden or a two-year framework
Buy a one or two-year-old container plant from a fruit specialist such as Pomona Fruits or Reads Nursery rather than a generic garden-centre pot, where the variety labelling on figs is notoriously loose. A two-year plant often arrives with two or three usable shoots already, which shortens the framework stage by a full season.
Cut the leader back to about 40 centimetres at planting, just above a pair of strong buds positioned left and right. Those two buds become the first ribs of the fan. If the plant only offers buds facing front and back, prune to the next pair down rather than accepting ribs that grow into the panel or straight out at the gardener. The aim by the end of the first summer is two arms tied at roughly 40 degrees from vertical, each 50 to 70 centimetres long, forming the bottom of the fan.
Step 3: Tie in with the right material
Use soft jute or a dedicated cordon training twine, not wire or plastic-coated ties that cut into the bark as the arms thicken. Fig wood expands fast, and a tight tie left through one growing season will girdle a young rib. Tie with a figure-of-eight loop, twine crossed between the shoot and the wire so the two never chafe directly. Check every tie each spring and slacken any that have closed up.
Step 4: Build the fan, two ribs at a time
Through the second and third summers, the fan develops by selecting new shoots from the upper side of each established arm and spacing them across the wires. The target geometry is arms radiating like the spokes of a half-wheel, with 25 to 30 centimetres between mature ribs at the panel’s outer edge. That spacing lets light reach every leaf and keeps air moving, which suppresses the grey mould that takes hold on congested fans in a wet August.
Pinch each developing rib back to five or six leaves in early summer. This forces the embryo figs that ripen the following year and stops the framework outrunning the panel before it is full. On an 1.8 metre fence about 2 metres wide, eight to ten ribs fill the space; beyond that the fan crowds itself and the lower fruit stays green.
Manage two fig crops with a clear eye on which one matters. The breba crop forms on old wood and ripens in early summer, often unreliably in cooler regions. The main crop forms on the current season’s growth and ripens August into September. The pea-sized embryo figs visible in autumn are the ones to protect over winter; any fig larger than a hazelnut by November will not ripen and should be rubbed off, because it draws energy and harbours rot.
Watering during the swelling period is the single biggest lever on fruit size. A fan in a restricted root pit dries out fast in July, and erratic watering splits the skins as the fruit takes up water unevenly after a dry spell. A rainwater butt fitted with a diverter on the nearest downpipe gives a steady supply at ambient temperature, which figs prefer to cold mains water. Aim to keep the root zone evenly moist from the point the main crop starts to swell until harvest, then taper off so the wood firms up.
Feed sparingly. A high-potash tomato feed such as Tomorite at half strength every two to three weeks through July and August supports fruit without driving the soft growth that fails to ripen. Stop all feeding by early September.
Step 5: Winter protection for the embryo figs
Below minus 5 Celsius the overwintering embryo figs blacken and drop, taking next year’s main crop with them. On a fan, the simplest protection is a curtain of horticultural fleece pegged over the framework on hard-frost nights and removed during mild spells so the wood does not soften under cover. In colder inland gardens, a permanent screen of bracken or straw tucked among the ribs and held with netting carries the embryos through to spring.
The south panel itself does a lot of the work, holding several degrees of stored daytime warmth into the night. A fan in this position routinely survives winters that kill a free-standing bush of the same variety a few metres away in open ground.
Step 6: Spring pruning and rib renewal
Prune figs in early spring once the worst frosts pass, never in autumn, since open cuts bleed latex and invite dieback through a wet winter. Remove any rib that has grown weak or bare at the base, cutting to a replacement shoot lower down so the fan keeps fruiting wood close to the framework instead of carrying all its crop at the tips.
Thin congested growth so light reaches the centre of the fan. Each rib should carry a single layer of leaves against the panel, not a thicket standing 30 centimetres proud of the wires. Latex sap irritates skin, so prune in long sleeves and wipe the secateurs after each cut to stop the milky residue gumming the blades.
Step 7: Harvest by feel, not by colour
Brown Turkey ripens to a dull purple-brown, but colour alone misleads. A ripe fig hangs down on a softened neck, gives to gentle pressure, and often shows a bead of nectar at the eye. Picked early it never sweetens off the plant, so leave each fruit until it droops. The main crop ripens unevenly across August and September, so expect to pick over the fan every few days across several weeks.
Wasps and birds find ripe figs before most gardeners do. A loose drape of fine netting over the lower ribs, where the earliest fruit sits, buys a few days; the highest fruit on a 1.8 metre panel usually escapes the worst of the bird damage simply by being out of easy reach.
Whether the breba crop is worth chasing at all in a cooler region remains an open question for anyone training a fan this far north, since the wood that would carry it is the same wood a hard pruner is tempted to cut back hard each spring.
