7 Step Apple Cox Spur Pruning Routine with Felco 2 Secateurs on M26 Rootstock
A Cox's Orange Pippin on M26 usually tops out at 2.5 to 3 metres, with spur systems close enough to inspect from a two-step platform. This seven-cut Felco 2 routine covers dead wood, crossing branches, spur thinning, leaders, laterals, water shoots, suckers, and the final inspection.
M26 sets the scale
M26 is a semi-dwarfing rootstock, producing a tree around 2.5 to 3 metres at maturity. At that size, every spur should be reachable from a two-step platform, which is exactly the scale needed for detailed spur pruning. You can look at each fruiting unit on its own and make small cuts with a clear view of the wood you are leaving.
The root system supplies moderate vigour. A Cox grafted onto M26 tends to make fewer water shoots than the same variety on MM106, and the spur wood it forms stays shorter and more compact.
Cox’s Orange Pippin is a tip-and-spur bearer with a strong bias toward spur production once the tree is established. After three or four seasons without renewal, spurs branch repeatedly into dense spur systems. The fruit buds at the back of those clusters lose light and weaken.
This routine fits a tree four to six years old that already has a permanent framework of four or five main limbs. It deals with spur renewal on those limbs, leaving the basic framework formation outside the job.
Cut one: dead, damaged, cankered, and crossing wood
Begin with the wood that plainly has to come out. Walk around the tree and remove anything dead, broken, or visibly cankered, cutting back to clean wood where the cambium under the bark is green. Cox is prone to canker on M26 in wet ground, and a sunken lesion girdling a spur cluster kills all growth beyond that point. This first pass is disease management as much as shaping.
Next, deal with crossing wood. When two branches rub, the bark wears away and leaves an entry wound. Felco 2 secateurs will cut stems up to roughly 25mm cleanly if the branch is seated deep in the jaw near the pivot. From any crossing pair, remove the weaker branch or the one with the poorer angle. On a neglected tree, this alone often opens the centre enough for the later spur decisions to become visible.
Dormant winter pruning suits this spur work. On a wet site, each pruning cut on Cox remains an exposed wound during months when the canker fungus is active, so the cleanest cuts belong on wood that clearly needs removal.
Cuts two and three: thinning and renewing the spur systems
A mature Cox spur system often looks like a knuckled, branching stub. It may carry four fruit buds or more than a dozen. The fruit buds are fat and rounded, easy to distinguish from flatter pointed growth buds once the tree is dormant.
After several years, that same spur system becomes crowded. The oldest buds sit nearest the trunk, and they are usually the first to lose strength. Fruit size, colour, and regular cropping all suffer when too many buds stay packed into a small space.
Cut two reduces the number of spur systems along a branch. On a vigorous limb, they may appear every 50 to 75mm. Thin them until each remaining cluster has air around it and light can reach its base. Where systems sit too close together, remove one whole cluster flush with the branch. A snag dies back, so keep the cut clean and close.
Cut three works inside the systems you keep. Look for the oldest, most exhausted parts of each knuckled cluster, especially sections that have stopped producing plump buds. Shorten the system back to two or three strong fruit buds on younger wood.
That is the renewal principle behind spur pruning on Cox. Favour two-year and three-year spur wood over tired five-year wood. A spur system treated this way carries fewer apples, with better size, and the tree avoids the biennial bearing pattern that overcropping can trigger.
The Felco 2 earns its place during this part of the job because the cuts are small and repetitive. A dull blade crushes slender spur wood, and crushed tissue heals slowly and invites infection. Strip the blade down, hone the bevel with a Felco 902 carbide sharpener until it catches a thumbnail, and the secateur will pass through a 6mm spur stub with no tearing.
During a long session, reapply the sharpener every twenty or thirty cuts. Spur wood is hard and blunts steel faster than soft summer growth. Sharp steel also makes the hand movements more precise when the blade has to slide into a crowded spur system without damaging the bud beside it.
Cut four: leaders and the height ceiling
M26 produces a tree that wants to finish around 3 metres, and the central leader or the tips of the main limbs need tipping each winter to hold that ceiling and encourage branching lower down. Shorten last season’s extension growth on each leader by about a third, cutting to an outward-facing bud so the next shoot heads away from the centre.
Place the cut roughly 5mm above the bud, with a gentle slope away from it, so water sheds cleanly. A close cut can kill the bud; a long stub dies back to the next node and leaves an untidy end.
On Cox, a tipped leader typically pushes one strong extension and two or three laterals during the following season. Those laterals become next year’s fruiting wood once they are shortened in turn.
Cut five: maiden laterals
New laterals from the previous summer, pencil-thick and unbranched, are the raw material for future spur systems. Shorten each one to four or five buds from its base; over the next two seasons those buds develop into fruit buds and begin the spur-building cycle later managed by cuts two and three.
Cut six: water shoots and basal regrowth
Vertical water shoots are the whippy, unbranched shoots that erupt from the upper sides of horizontal limbs after a hard prune. They carry leaf growth without fruit and shade the spurs below. Remove them at the base unless one fills a genuine gap in the framework. In that case, tie it down toward the horizontal to slow its vigour and induce fruit-bud formation.
M26 suckers less than some stocks, although it can still send up the occasional shoot from below the graft union. On a correctly planted tree, that union sits about 150mm above soil level. Anything emerging below it is rootstock growth, not Cox, and it has to come off flush at the point of origin because rootstock growth saps energy and never produces the planted variety.
Tear small suckers away when possible. Tearing removes the dormant basal buds that a clean cut can leave behind to regrow.
A worked example: one limb with eight spur systems
Take a single horizontal limb on a five-year-old Cox with eight spur systems along its 80cm length. Two systems are within 30mm of each other near the midpoint, both moderately vigorous. Three are old four-knuckle clusters with weak basal buds. The remaining three are healthy two-year systems.
The count changes in stages. Cut two removes one of the crowded midpoint systems, leaving seven. Cut three then reduces each of the three old clusters back to two strong buds and trims one branch off each cluster, turning exhausted wood into renewed spurs. The three young systems are left alone for this season.
The limb finishes with seven spur systems in place of eight, while the total fruit-bud count drops from perhaps forty congested buds to around eighteen well-spaced ones. Those eighteen buds sit in full light. The following August, that limb sets fewer apples, each one larger and better coloured, and the tree keeps enough reserve to flower again the next spring without resting.
Multiply the same judgement across four main framework branches and the full routine takes perhaps forty minutes on a dormant tree. Most of that time goes into cuts two and three. The structural cuts, one, four, and six, move quickly once the eye is trained to spot dead wood, crossing pairs, vertical regrowth, and suckers.
Cut seven: the final inspection pass
After the six working cuts, step back and read the tree as a full structure. The aim is an open centre with clear passage through the canopy, light on every remaining spur, and no two branches heading for the same airspace. Cuts that felt doubtful earlier usually become clear once the surrounding clutter is gone, and this final pass is the moment to make those deferred choices with the whole framework visible. The remaining hesitation often sits where surviving branches still want the same airspace.
