Emorsgate EM1 is a general-purpose meadow mixture sold at a sowing rate of 4 grams per square metre, which converts to roughly 600 grams across a 50-metre bank cut to 3 metres of working depth. The sequence below covers ground preparation timing, the broadcast itself, and the first 18 months of management, with the soil-fertility constraint that decides whether the mix establishes at all.

Why the bank is the hard case, not the easy one

A 50-metre bank presents two problems a flat meadow does not. Surface water runs off a slope before it soaks in, so broadcast seed washes downhill in the first heavy rain and germinates in a dense band at the toe. Soil on a bank is also frequently subsoil or imported fill, which sounds like a disadvantage and is in fact the single condition Emorsgate EM1 prefers. EM1 is formulated for soils of low to moderate fertility, with 20 per cent wildflower seed and 80 per cent grass by weight, the grasses being fine-leaved species such as crested dogstail and common bent. On rich topsoil the grass fraction outcompetes the flowers within two seasons. The bank, stripped or disturbed during construction, often delivers exactly the impoverished substrate the mixture needs.

Measure the working area before ordering. A 50-metre length at 3 metres of slope face is 150 square metres, and at Emorsgate’s 4 g/m2 rate that is 600 grams. Order in 100-gram increments and keep 50 grams back for the gap-filling pass described in step five.

Step one and two: strip the competition, then leave it fallow

Existing vegetation is the first thing to remove. Perennial grasses and docks regenerate from root fragments and will swamp seedlings, so a single cultivation pass is rarely enough. The reliable method is to cultivate the bank, allow the weed seed bank to germinate over four to six weeks, then hoe or cultivate again to kill that flush. Two flushes removed this way before sowing cut the early weed burden substantially compared with sowing into freshly turned ground.

On a slope, cultivation depth matters. Working only the top 50 to 75 millimetres avoids bringing buried weed seed to the surface and avoids loosening the bank to the point of slumping. A spring-tine cultivator or a hand mattock on the steeper sections produces a firm, fine tilth without creating a deep loose layer that slides.

The fallow period is the step most often skipped, and skipping it is the most common reason a meadow sowing fails in year one. Bare cultivated soil on a bank also needs the fallow weeks to settle and firm under rain, because seed broadcast onto loose fluffy tilth sits too deep once that tilth collapses. By the time the second weed flush is killed, the surface has consolidated to a seedbed that holds the next rain rather than shedding it.

Timing the fallow is a matter of counting backwards from the sowing window. For an autumn sow in late August or September, begin cultivation in early July. For a spring sow in March or April, begin the previous autumn and overwinter the fallow.

Step three: the broadcast

Emorsgate supplies EM1 as a fine seed with a wide range of seed sizes, from large grass caryopses down to dust-fine flower seed, so it settles and separates in the bag. Shake the container before measuring out each batch. Mix the 600 grams of seed with dry sand or barley meal at roughly ten parts carrier to one part seed by volume, which makes the small quantity visible on the soil and shows where you have and have not covered.

Divide the bank into a grid and divide the seed-and-carrier mix into matching portions, half to be sown walking across the slope and half walking up and down, the two passes at right angles. This crosshatch is the only reliable way to get even coverage by hand on a surface where you cannot stand still. Broadcast low, from below waist height, so wind does not carry the dust-fine fraction off the bank entirely.

Do not rake the seed in. Meadow seed needs light to germinate and a sowing depth of more than 5 millimetres buries most of it beyond recovery. The seed is surface-sown and pressed into contact with the soil, not covered.

Step four: firm the seed, the step a slope makes awkward

Seed-to-soil contact is what triggers germination, and on flat ground a roller delivers it. A bank too steep for a roller needs the back of a rake or, on short sections, treading. The seed must be pressed onto the surface it is lying on.

Step five: yellow rattle, the lever that keeps the meadow open

Yellow rattle, Rhinanthus minor, is a root hemiparasite that attaches to grass roots and draws water and nutrients from them, weakening the grass and opening gaps for flowers. It is the difference between a meadow that holds its diversity for years and one that closes to rank grass by the third season. The 50-gram reserve from step three is for over-sowing rattle into the establishing sward.

The constraint is that rattle seed is short-lived and requires a long cold stratification period. Seed must be surface-sown in autumn, between late August and the end of November, to receive the winter chilling that breaks dormancy. Spring-sown rattle largely fails because it has not had the cold. If the main EM1 sowing went in during spring, the rattle pass is a separate autumn operation onto the young sward.

Rattle also needs the grass kept short going into autumn, below 50 millimetres, and bare patches scratched into the surface where the seed lands. It will not establish into a dense closed canopy. Over-sow at around 0.1 to 0.5 grams per square metre, which from a 50-gram reserve covers the full 150-square-metre bank with a margin.

The seed germinates the following spring, flowers and sets seed by midsummer, then dies, an annual that re-sows itself if the meadow is cut after seed drop. A meadow that fails to carry rattle through is one where the late-summer cut came too early and stripped the seed before it ripened.

Step six: the first two cuts decide everything

Management in year one is counterintuitive because the instinct is to leave a new meadow alone. The opposite is correct. Through the first summer, cut the establishing sward to around 50 to 70 millimetres whenever annual weeds or vigorous grass reach 100 millimetres, removing the cuttings each time. This checks the fast-growing competition while the slow perennial flowers build root systems below the cut. A new meadow can need three or four such cuts in its first growing season.

From the second year the regime settles into the standard hay-meadow pattern. The main cut comes in late July or August, after the bulk of the flowers including yellow rattle have set and dropped seed, and the cuttings are always removed. Leaving them to rot returns nutrients to the soil and pushes the balance back toward grass, undoing the fertility constraint the whole approach depends on. A light autumn cut and the removal of that material keeps the sward short for rattle germination.

Removing cuttings from a 50-metre bank by hand is laborious, and a scythe with the cut grass raked downslope onto a path is more practical than a powered mower on the steeper faces. The grass strimmer leaves a finely chopped layer that is hard to gather and acts as a mulch, which is the outcome to avoid. Whatever the tool, the material has to leave the bank.

The nutrient export by cutting and removal is slow. A bank that started too rich can take three to five years of removed cuts before the grass fraction eases and the flower diversity visibly widens, and on imported topsoil the meadow may never reach the flower density of one sown onto subsoil. The fertility you begin with sets a ceiling the management can approach but not exceed.

Which raises the question the sowing routine cannot settle on its own: whether a bank built from unknown fill is impoverished enough for EM1 to hold its flowers, or rich enough that the grass will close over the rattle no matter how diligently the late cuts are timed. That answer arrives only in the third summer, when the sward shows whether the gaps are still open.
