6 Step Pampas Grass Cutback Method with Stihl HSA 50 on a 3-Metre Clump
A mature Cortaderia selloana clump 3 metres across is slow, abrasive work for a hedge trimmer. With the Stihl HSA 50 on an 18V AK battery, the seasonal cutback works best as six separate passes, with blade angle and debris clearance deciding how smoothly the job goes.
Late February through early March is the usual hard-cutback window for many growers in temperate zones. The timing sits after the worst frost risk has usually passed and before fresh blades push through the crown. A cut made too early leaves the exposed centre vulnerable to rot if a sharp cold snap arrives.
The Stihl HSA 50 has a 50 cm double-sided blade and 24 mm tooth spacing. That spacing is wide enough for the fibrous old foliage of Cortaderia selloana, where a 20 mm domestic hedge cutter can bog down. Pampas leaves are serrated and loaded with silica, so the wear is real. On a clump of this size, a cheap blade can lose its edge in a single session.
Read the clump before cutting
A 3-metre clump consists of a ring of live crown growth around a dead, compacted core. By year five or six, that core can run 40 to 60 cm deep. If the HSA 50 is laid flat across the top at the start, as if shaping a Topbuxus ball, cut material drops into the middle and the blade starts fighting its own debris within a minute.
The better sequence is perimeter first, crown last. Work the outside down in horizontal bands, clear what falls, then move inward. The HSA 50 weighs 3.2 kg with an AK 20 battery fitted, so hip-height work around the outside is manageable for a sustained spell. Starting with overhead cuts over the crown burns energy early and makes blade control worse when the dense shoulders still need trimming.
Six stages for one large clump
Stage one, clear the skirt. Drop the lowest 30 cm of dead outer foliage all the way around. Cut upward at a shallow angle so the loose material falls outward and leaves a working gap at the base.
Stage two, band the perimeter. Work in 40 cm vertical increments and take down the outer wall in rings. Keep the HSA 50 blade vertical against the clump face. The 50 cm bar reaches roughly halfway into a 3-metre clump from one side, so expect four to six full repositionings around the circumference.
Stage three, reduce the shoulders. Once the wall is down to roughly 60 cm, change to a 45-degree blade angle and bring the rounded shoulders toward the centre. This is the heavy part of the cut, where most of the green-and-tan mass comes off.
Stage four, expose the crown. With the shoulders removed, the dead core becomes visible. Cut the remaining live blades down to a 15 to 20 cm collar around the crown. Stop above the woody crown itself. The HSA 50 blade is made for foliage up to about 24 mm, and the crown base will stall it.
Stage five, clear the core debris. Stop cutting and pull the loose dead thatch out of the centre by hand or with a long-tined fork. A clump of this age can hold several kilos of trapped dead matter, which throttles new spring shoots if it stays packed in the middle.
Stage six, tidy the collar. Run the blade once around the 15 cm collar to even the height. New growth pushes from this band, and a level cut gives the April and May flush a cleaner outline.
Battery load in dry, fibrous growth
A single AK 20 battery, rated at around 144 Wh, usually runs out before a 3-metre clump is finished when the foliage is dry and dense. It will often cover the perimeter banding, then stall somewhere during shoulder reduction. The AK 30, at roughly 180 Wh, extends the working time. Operators handling several clumps in one session tend to rotate two batteries on the Stihl AL 101 charger.
The HSA 50 draws hardest in stage three, with the blade buried in the thickest mixed mass of live and dead leaf. Forcing the bar through too quickly triggers the overload cutout and the motor pauses. A steadier feed lets the teeth cut at their own pace, keeps current draw inside the cutout threshold, and noticeably stretches the charge.
Heat also builds during a long cut. The blade and gearcase warm up, while silica in the leaf accelerates tooth wear. A mid-session wipe-down and a light spray of Stihl resin solvent keep the cut cleaner through the second half of the job.
On heavy clay, some growers report that old crowns hold better with a hard cut every second year than with annual cutting. That experience belongs in the planning, especially where a clump has already built a raised, woody centre.
Protecting skin and eyes
Pampas leaf edges slice skin like a paper blade, so cut-resistant gauntlets are the baseline, and the core clear-out is the part of the job most likely to draw blood. Long sleeves matter as much as the gloves do, since fine cut particles work into bare forearms and itch for hours afterward. The same dry fragments come flying back toward your face during vertical banding, which is why goggles are non-negotiable rather than optional. Adding a face shield over the goggles helps most during the shoulder cuts, where debris tends to rise from below as the blade chews into the thicker mass.
Footing and waste
The base of a large clump is often raised on its own mound of accumulated material, so footing can be uneven. Plant both feet on level ground outside the skirt before each cut, then reach in from there. Standing on soft crown debris increases the chance of over-reaching while the blade is still moving.
Cortaderia selloana is classed as invasive in parts of California, New Zealand, and along the Mediterranean coast. Plumes and seed-bearing material must be bagged to prevent seed spread. A 3-metre clump produces enough cutback waste to fill three to four standard 240-litre green bins, so arranging disposal capacity before the blade starts is worth the effort.
Timing one clump with two batteries
For one operator using two AK 30 batteries, the skirt clear is quick and barely touches the first charge. Perimeter banding is the largest single block of cutting time, spread across four repositionings, and it accounts for the bulk of the first half-hour at the tool. Shoulder reduction is where the real load shows up, and it tends to drain most of the first battery on its own.
Crown exposure goes fast once the shoulders are gone. Pulling thatch from the core is hand work that adds a noticeable stretch with the trimmer switched off, and the final collar tidy is the shortest of all the stages. Taken together, the active cutting and pulling sit at a bit over an hour for one person, before the separate work of bagging waste begins.
The second AK 30 carries the shoulder and crown stages with margin to spare. Slotting the manual thatch removal into a charging pause keeps the work moving with little idle time. Bagging often takes about as long as the cutting did on a plant this size, and it cannot start until the tool work has exposed the crown.
The one thing the cut does not reveal is whether the crown will push strongly in spring. The collar looks tidy and the bins fill up, but the vigour of the new flush stays unknown until the April growth confirms it.
