6 Step Comfrey Liquid Feed Brew with Symphytum Bocking 14 Cuttings

Bocking 14 is a sterile Symphytum x uplandicum cultivar that sets no viable seed, so it stays in place in a vegetable plot. Six root cuttings planted 60cm apart can produce enough leaf within two seasons for liquid feed used at about 10:1 dilution.

Six Bocking 14 root cuttings, each one a 6cm to 8cm piece of fleshy root, can make a permanent comfrey bed that gives three to four leaf cuts per season once mature. The cultivar was selected at the Henry Doubleday Research Association by Lawrence Hills for sterility, which means it cannot spread by seed in the manner of wild Symphytum officinale. Set the cuttings horizontally about 5cm deep and space them 60cm to 90cm apart. Choose the site carefully, because the roots are brittle and almost any fragment left in the soil can regrow after digging.

Why the leaf is worth brewing

Comfrey leaf has a nutrient profile closer to a potassium feed than to a balanced fertiliser. Dried analyses commonly cited by HDRA and organic growing surveys put potassium at roughly 5 to 8 percent on a dry-matter basis, with nitrogen around 2 to 3 percent and phosphate lower again. That potassium bias explains its value for fruiting crops, where flower set and fruit quality matter more than extra soft leaf.

The taproot reaches well over a metre into the subsoil and draws up minerals that shallow-rooted annuals never reach. Cutting the leaf and allowing it to break down moves that mineral store into a liquid feed that tomatoes can take up within days. Among common allotment plants, comfrey is unusual for producing that concentration with so little work once the bed is established.

The 6 steps, with the timings that count

The first cut comes when the plants reach roughly 60cm, usually from late April onward in temperate zones. Wear gloves, because the leaf hairs can irritate skin. Leave the plants alone through their establishment year so the cuttings build root reserves through the first summer, then begin harvesting the following spring.

Next comes packing. Cram wilted leaf tightly into a lidded container. A 30-litre water butt works, and so does a lidded bucket if the batch is smaller. The third step is choosing the brew style: water added, or pure leaf juice. For pure juice, add no water. Weight the leaf with a brick on a board and let it rot down into a black concentrate over three to five weeks. For the watered version, cover the leaf with water. That ferments in about two to three weeks and produces a thinner liquid with a much stronger odour.

Collection is step four. The pure-juice method needs a drilled hole at the base of the container and a jar underneath to catch the syrupy black liquid. Step five is dilution when feeding: use pure concentrate at 15:1 to 20:1 with water, and use watered brew at around 10:1, aiming for the colour of weak tea.

Step six is the feeding schedule. Apply weekly to fruiting crops after the flowers have set. Six mature plants can supply a regular feed run from June through September.

The smell

Pure concentrate smells bad. The water-steeped brew smells like a drain in August, so a tight lid and a position downwind of the patio matter from the first batch.

Tomatoes and raspberries are where it earns its keep

Greenhouse cordon tomatoes are the standard recipient. Once the first truss sets fruit, a potassium-led feed at 10:1 every seven days supports swelling fruit without encouraging the soft green growth associated with nitrogen-heavy feeds. Growers running a Gabriel Ash or similar aluminium-framed greenhouse through a long season often move from a balanced feed to a comfrey-dominant one at first fruit set, around the third or fourth truss, then keep that rhythm until the plants are stopped two leaves above the top truss in late summer.

Autumn fruiting raspberry canes also use it well. The primocane types, including Autumn Bliss and Polka, fruit on the current year’s growth, so a comfrey drench in late spring fits the period when new canes are extending. Because these varieties are cut to the ground in February, all the fruiting wood has to be built fresh each year, and the potassium supply feeds that work. A 10-litre watering can of diluted feed per square metre of cane row, applied two or three times between May and the start of fruiting, is a reasonable rate. Forced rhubarb gives a useful contrast in practice: the spring crop under a terracotta cloche wants no feed during forcing and then takes a heavy mulch of rotted manure afterward. Comfrey feed stays out of that forcing stage.

The practical limit is nitrogen. Comfrey feed alone will not green up a hungry brassica or a lawn, because the nitrogen fraction is too low and too slow-release in liquid form. In a wider feeding plan, it fills the potassium role.

A worked example from one small bed

Assume six mature Bocking 14 plants, each giving roughly 1kg of fresh leaf per cut, with three cuts in a season. That produces 18kg of leaf a year. In a 30-litre butt using the pure-juice method, one full charge is likely to take 4kg to 5kg of packed leaf, so the butt can be refilled three or four times over the season.

Each refill of pure concentrate yields perhaps 500ml to 1 litre of black juice, depending on how dry the season has been. Diluted at 20:1, one litre of concentrate makes 20 litres of usable feed. That is enough for two full waterings of a ten-plant tomato cordon row at one litre per plant. Across the season, the same bed can cover a small greenhouse and a short raspberry row without buying a separate potassium feed. Once the cuttings are bought, the ongoing inputs are the standing plants, collected leaf, and waiting time.

For speed in the first productive year, the water-steeped method gives usable liquid in under three weeks. The trade-off is a larger volume of weaker feed and a harsher smell. The pure-juice method suits storage better because the concentrate can be bottled and rationed out.

Mulch and hot compost

Comfrey does not all have to be brewed. Cut leaves laid 5cm thick around potatoes or beans wilt and break down in two to three weeks, feeding the crop as they rot and suppressing weeds for a short spell. The material is too soft to last as long-term mulch, so it is best used during the growing season.

It also works as a compost accelerant. A layer of comfrey leaf between drier brown material such as autumn leaves can heat a heap quickly because fresh comfrey carries both moisture and nitrogen. That may seem at odds with its reputation as a potassium feed, but the fresh leaf is wetter and more nitrogen-active than a dried analysis suggests. A cold leaf mould pile made from oak and beech leaves is a different project: it is kept slow and fungal, taking 18 months to two years to become the crumbly soil conditioner that holds water well in seed compost. Comfrey belongs in the hot heap.

The instruction that still looks odd

Most cutting suppliers describe the watered brew first, even though that method gives a thinner liquid and the worst smell. Why do the default instructions keep favouring the messier version when the pure-juice method gives a bottled concentrate with less liquid to store?
