6 Step Box Hedge Caterpillar Control with Topbuxus XenTari on Buxus Sempervirens
A clipped box hedge can be reduced to brown lace in a fortnight because the larvae sit deep inside the foliage where contact sprays rarely land. Topbuxus XenTari, a 5 gram sachet of wettable Bt aizawai powder for 5 litres of water, works after the caterpillar eats treated leaves.
Cydalima perspectivalis, the box tree moth, reached western Europe inside imported nursery stock around 2007 and now appears as far north as Scotland and across most of the continental US. The adult is a striking white moth with a dark brown border. The damage comes from the green caterpillar with black stripes, usually hidden under silk webbing on inner branches.
By the time the outside of a box hedge turns brown, the feeding has often shifted elsewhere in the plant. A late spray then wets abandoned webbing and browned leaves while active larvae continue feeding deeper inside the hedge. That is why timing and spray placement matter as much as the product in the tank.
Topbuxus XenTari is the home-garden formulation of Bt aizawai sold specifically for Buxus. The active organism produces a crystal protein that ruptures the caterpillar gut lining after ingestion. Only insects chewing treated box leaves receive the dose, so bees foraging nearby, ladybirds and birds picking off dying larvae are unaffected. This selectivity is the reason it remains usable in gardens where broad-spectrum insecticides have disappeared from shelves.
Catch the flight before mixing spray
Hang a pheromone trap in or beside the hedge in early April. Adult flight is the dependable signal that eggs will soon hatch. The Topbuxus trap uses a lure that mimics the female sex pheromone and draws in males, so the catch gives a local reading of moth activity around the hedge.
Check the trap every few days. A rise from single figures to a dozen or more males in one check means a generation is mating. Larvae usually appear one to two weeks later, with the exact interval governed by temperature.
Working without a trap leaves the timing to guesswork, and the usual guess lands late. Many gardeners first notice box tree moth when webbing is visible. At that stage the caterpillars are larger, feeding quickly and harder to kill.
Bt performs best on small early-instar larvae because they chew constantly and can take in a lethal dose within a day or two. A third-instar caterpillar may survive a marginal dose and pupate anyway. The first visible browning of the outside leaves is therefore a poor trigger for the first treatment.
A programme fixed only to the calendar wastes product between flights and can miss the peak hatch. Use the trap catch as the guide for tightening or pausing the interval. When catches climb, the hatch window is active and a seven-day interval is justified. When catches fall close to zero for two consecutive checks, that generation has largely pupated and spraying can pause until the next flight lifts the count again.
Temperature moves the whole schedule. Box tree moth development is heat-driven: a cool, wet June stretches the time between hatches, while a hot July compresses it. The lower developmental threshold sits around 8 to 12 degrees Celsius, and accumulated warmth above that level determines how fast eggs and larvae progress. In practice, the southern Mediterranean sees its first generation weeks ahead of central Germany. A single national spray date would be inaccurate for almost every garden, so monitor local trap catches and local temperature.
Dense pheromone trapping without Bt has some supporters. A few growers report acceptable control on small hedges by removing enough males to reduce mating success. On a large hedge, especially with box in neighbouring gardens, mated females can fly in from outside the trap radius. Traps provide reliable timing; as a standalone control they hold mainly where the box population is small and isolated.
Mix only the amount you will use
The standard home rate is one sachet, around 5 grams, to 5 litres of water in a pressure sprayer. Use lukewarm water and shake the sprayer hard. The powder forms a suspension, and the spore crystals settle within minutes if the tank stands still.
Mix for the same day’s work. Bt aizawai is a living preparation, and a tank left overnight loses potency as the bacteria degrade in dilute, chlorinated tap water.
A collapsible 5 litre pump sprayer usually covers about 8 to 12 metres of a waist-high formal hedge per fill, with lower coverage on dense old box. Topiary balls and parterre edging use more spray than expected because the target is the hidden underside of every leaf. For a long avenue of clipped Buxus sempervirens, premeasure several sachets, spray at full strength, then refill as each tank empties.
Spray into the plant
The common application error is wetting the outer skin of the hedge. Box caterpillars feed first on the inner, shaded leaves. Push the lance into the plant, angle it upward and soak the foliage from inside outward until liquid drips from the lower branches.
On a clipped sphere, work around the plant in quarters. Lift the lower skirt of foliage and spray underneath. The underside matters because webbing and young larvae often sit where a surface pass cannot reach.
Apply in the evening or under cloud. Ultraviolet light breaks down Bt crystals within a day or two of exposure, so a treatment under blazing midday sun loses much of its killing power before enough leaf tissue is eaten. Rain within six hours can wash the deposit off before ingestion. Evening spraying gives the caterpillars a full night and morning to feed on coated leaves while UV exposure is at its lowest.
Repeat while the generation is active
One spray does not finish a generation. Eggs hatch over a stretched window, so larvae killed today may have been sitting beside eggs that open next week.
Reapply every seven to ten days for as long as the trap continues catching adults from that generation. In a warm summer in southern England or the lower Rhine valley, there are two and sometimes three overlapping generations, running from April into October.
Clear webbing, frass and dead larvae
After the spray has had a few days to work, go through the hedge by hand. Pull out the silk webbing along with frass and dead larvae. This is messy work, but it changes how well later sprays can reach the remaining foliage.
The webbing shelters surviving caterpillars from later treatments. Removing it exposes hidden leaves and reduces the protected pockets where larvae can continue feeding. The brown nests also hold overwintering pupae, so clearing them in autumn reduces the population that emerges the following spring.
Severe infestations sometimes need hard pruning. Box tolerates being cut back into old wood and reshoots from the base. An overrun parterre can be sheared low, sprayed as it regrows and recovered over a season. The regrowth flush is especially attractive to the moth because soft new leaves are the food young larvae prefer. Keep the trap and sprayer in use throughout that recovery phase.
Resistance and maintenance pressure
Bt aizawai has no documented field resistance in Cydalima perspectivalis at the time of writing, which is unusual for a product used this heavily. The likely reason is inconsistent home-garden application. Treated and untreated patches across a landscape do not create the sustained selection pressure seen in monoculture agriculture.
As box tree moth spreads and spraying intensifies, that record may come under pressure. Rotation still matters in maintenance: trap pressure, hand removal, occasional hard pruning and Bt sprays apply different stresses to the population. The unresolved local pressure is how much mating continues in nearby untreated box after a garden hedge has been sprayed and cleared.
