As autumn approaches, the cooler weather presents the perfect opportunity for outdoor exploration. Labor Day weekend is one of the best times to purchase high-quality camping and hiking gear at reduced prices. Where the tent deals show up
At REI, Backcountry, and Public Lands, the tent rack is where Labor Day can feel least theatrical. Prior-season models need room before spring 2026 lines reach warehouses in January, so the outgoing colors get moved first. A 3-season backpacking tent that carried a $399 list in April often appears at 30 to 40 percent off for the holiday weekend, while the same tent in next year’s color remains at full price.
The field difference is usually absent. Same nylon. Same DAC aluminum poles. Same 1,200mm bathtub floor. If the model name and spec sheet match, the discounted colorway is doing the work, and that is the cleanest value in the sale.
The exception sits at the very light end of the wall. A Zpacks Duplex or a Durston X-Mid Pro 2 is unlikely to turn into a Labor Day steal. Dyneema Composite Fabric supply stays tight, demand runs through the calendar, and the discount usually reads like a courtesy line on the product page. Shoppers waiting for a dramatic cut on those tents tend to find 5 to 10 percent instead.
The surplus is more visible one tier down, among freestanding double-wall tents from MSR, Nemo, and Big Agnes. A previous-year Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 can land near $350 against a $499 list, and that is still the same kind of shelter most backpackers actually want for mixed campsites, wet mornings, and a little forgiveness during setup.
Weight claims deserve a pause before price does. Minimum trail weight and packed weight commonly differ by 200 to 400 grams on 2-person tents. Minimum trail weight removes the stuff sack, stakes, and guylines from the count. Packed weight is what rides in the pack. A Nemo Hornet Elite OSMO lists a minimum trail weight under 740 grams, then comes closer to 900 grams once the eight stakes needed for a taut wind pitch are included.
Waterproof numbers matter more in autumn than they do in summer because fall storms can sit over a campsite for hours. A 3,000mm floor handles standing water through a rainy night more confidently than a 1,200mm floor, which can begin to wick. Most sub-$400 backpacking tents use a 1,200mm canopy with a 2,000mm to 3,000mm floor, enough for September and October in temperate ranges. Once temperatures drop below freezing, condensation takes over as the bigger problem. Vent placement and double-wall construction matter more there than a higher hydrostatic head rating. A single-wall tent in October can collect frost on the inner face by dawn unless peak vents are built in.
The stake count is another quiet clue. A semi-freestanding design such as the Hornet needs the foot end staked out to keep its shape, so granite slab or packed sand can weaken the pitch. Fully freestanding models from Big Agnes and MSR stand without stakes, which becomes decisive at alpine sites above treeline where soil is thin.
Boot markdowns follow the color rack
Salomon, La Sportiva, and Lowa rotate boot colors on a roughly 18-month cycle. When a color drops out, discounts of 25 to 35 percent are common, even though the underlying construction can stay identical for two or three model generations. A Salomon Quest 4 GTX in a retired color over Labor Day often sells near $160 against a $230 list, with the same Contagrip outsole and Gore-Tex membrane found on the current-season pair.
Fit timing decides whether that markdown helps. Sizing does not travel cleanly across brands. A half-size to full-size drift is normal, and European-lasted boots from Lowa and Hanwag run narrower through the midfoot than American lasts from Danner or Keen. A buyer who knows a Salomon 10.5 fits cannot assume a La Sportiva 10.5 will. Return windows at most Labor Day retailers run 30 to 90 days, which is what makes online boot buying workable.
Buy the boots first
Footwear should be the first Labor Day purchase, and the retailer with the most generous return window is usually worth choosing. Tents, pads, filters, and stoves tolerate a sizing guess; boots do not.
Sleeping bags need the fine print
A 20F sleeping bag can mean two different things, and the distinction matters on a frosty October morning. EN/ISO 23537 comfort numbers are the ones to read first. Those two figures on the same bag can differ by 8 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. A bag advertised as 20F by its limit rating is more realistically a 28F to 30F comfort bag. For most temperate autumn camping down to light frost, a true 20F comfort-rated bag is the safer target.
Fill power sets the warmth-to-weight equation. The range from 650 to 850 fill down changes how light a warm bag can be, and the premium 850-fill models rarely drop past 15 percent during Labor Day sales. The bigger surplus is usually in 650 to 700 fill down and synthetic bags. A synthetic bag from Nemo or a 650-fill down bag from Kelty at 30 to 40 percent off is the honest fall-camping value.
The pad is part of the same warmth system. A sleeping pad below R-value 3 lets ground cold pull heat from the sleeper’s back even if the bag rating looks adequate. That $400 difference is almost entirely colorway and prior-season surplus, with no performance loss in the field. The stove, water filter, and pack round out the system, though their discounts are less dependable. A Sawyer Squeeze filter stays near $40 across the year, and an MSR PocketRocket 2 rarely falls below $45.
Packs behave more like boots when colors retire. An Osprey Atmos AG 65 in a discontinued shade can land around $200 against a $290 list. The same fit and suspension make the color discount meaningful if the size is right.
What can wait
Layering apparel usually receives the shallowest Labor Day cuts. Merino base layers and synthetic insulation sell at full price straight into the fall season that the sale precedes. A Patagonia Nano Puff or an Arc’teryx Atom commonly holds list through October, and retailers have little reason to clear them before cold weather does the selling.
That makes budget timing more important than cart size. Hard goods are the better Labor Day targets: the tent, bag, pad, and boots with real surplus pressure behind them. Insulated jackets tend to become more interesting in late-November clearance, after the first wave of fall buying has passed.
Durability still unsettles the boot aisle. A $160 synthetic pair can look cheaper than a $230 leather pair at checkout, then lose that advantage if the midsole tires early and the leather boot stays comfortable through more seasons. Labor Day pricing makes the first decision visible; the longer test starts after the tags are gone.
